he is eating fine playing as usual, but the gagging and coughing after drinking water is bothering me, what could it be? I'll call the vet tomorrow to have his throat checked, he's a 9lb maltipoo.

Sometimes small dogs suffer from collapsing tracheas. Make sure you keep him calm before and after he drinks the excitement makes it worse and try offering him little bits of water at a time he may be drinking too much.

Is he fine other wise and just in a hurry to drink? Is his gums pink and his nose wet? hold his mouth closed and see if he breathes through his nose. Listen to his chest. Do you hear a weazing when he breathes? Could be a cold not letting him breathe while drinking.

sounds like he is simply drinking to fast. but to be safe have him checked.
