My mom brought a sausage (from france) on the airplane, and got fined 300$. Isn't that a bit much? AND they took away her sausage!

Sounds like she wasn't fined for having food, she was fined for illegal import. Certain items like meat, produce, and alcohol cannot be brought into the US by individuals, they can only be imported by companies who pay a tariff. Your mother should have checked with the airline or the State Dept. before bringing it aboard the plane.

She broke the law and she paid the fine. There are signs everywhere that say you can not bring food or food products from another country into the United States. They have a station while you are going through customs in the airport in Paris that has a sign asking if you are bringing food back to the USA, it tells you it's illegal and they have a bin where you can throw it out, no muss, no fuss.

She did not buy it on the airplane.

Lastly if she falsely signed a customs declaration that she was not bringing food or food products into the United States on her customs form, then she got off easy. The customs people would\could have charged her with filing false information as well as bringing in the food.

She should be thankful that the $300.00 fine and the consfication of the food is all she got. By the way, if she does it again, they won't be as lenient, especially if she did sign a customs form saying she was not bringing any food or food products into the United States.

If your asking me if I have any sympathy for her the answer is no. The food may have diseases in it that are harmful to both people and animals including an animal disease called BSE which is transferable to humans. There have been thousands of stories about BSE and the harm it can do both animals and humans on the news. BSE eats away at a sheep's, cow's or human's brain until they die, it is not pretty to watch.

She got fined for violating u.s. agriculture laws and not declaring the sausage. It wasn't the airline that imposed the fine. It was the U.S. government Customs Officer. Unfortunately many countries have problems with diseases in thier agriculture products. Sausage comes from pork and pork is not allowed to cross international borders due to some diseases like swine fever. The fines imposed by customs are designed to discourage travelers from violating the laws.

I hope every inch of that sausage was worth it. No I have not been fined because if I get on a plane I am stoned and I have the munchies. They don't have time to fine me.

No and that's BS, the airline company is there to provide transport via airplane, and relative safety during so, anything else is stepping beyond their bounds. Although I would advise that your mother should have used some pertinence and stealth in doing so.
