Atheism is NOT a "belief." Atheism is derived from the Greek, atheos, and means simply "away from the belief in a god or gods." Atheists do not "believe," and it is incorrect to assume that the belief in a supernatural entity or entities is, somehow, equivalent to the "non-belief" in those same beings. It isn't.

There cannot be an Atheist "Church", or an Atheist "priest" anymore than there could be an Atheist "god."

I am a Christian, so I can't answer from another perspective, but I have always kind of thought it is because Christians tend to speak up more about their beliefs and when they think something is wrong than other religions in general. We are living in a society where it is a really big deal to disagree with something, we are so fixated on what our rights should be and tend to neglect the responsibility and the consequences that come from, for example, being promiscuous. I am not putting anyone down here, this is just the way I have come to understand it.

I don't think athiest can be a religion because they don't believe in anything that would count towards a religion. I am not familiar with what an athiest actually is though

The correct word is Atheist, not "athiest".
Atheist: someone who doesn't believe in God.

Religion: beliefs and worship concerning the existence of One God.

So Atheist is not a religion.

Atheist means lack of a belief in god. Don't most religions have holidays, saints, sacred rituals and texts, a belief in the supernatural, and blind faith? I' don't really see these elements in any atheists that I know.

as an atheist I believe in religion, it creates a lot of positive things in our world, it just means I do not believe in god(s).

Please ignore "Fireball226's" answer, she is one of the biggest Bible thumping self-righteous Christians on this site and her answers never contain more than 2 word answers or the phrase "Jesus is the answer to everything" (hence the reason why only 1 in 50 of her answers is selected as the best answer).

.....wow...it appears there are a lot of self-righteous Christians here today that feel they have the right to claim to know what atheists think. Many of us DO believe in the positive power of religion.

No, atheism is not a religion. Atheism is just a lack of belief in a god or gods. Atheism is not a belief that there is no god or gods, just a lack of belief in them.
