We have so many unopened chocolates, christmas pud, christmas cake and snacks and it seem such a waste there must be people who want them.

Maybe the salvation army if there's one near. Or give it to a beggar if you dont like giving money, im sure they'd appreciate it =]

It really depends on where you live. I'd suggest doing an on-line search of local charities, and if you're unsuccessful in doing that, perhaps contacting your local council which may be able to provide you with a list.
Not only is it a good opportunity to donate those items which is first and foremost terrific, but also a good opportunity to find out where your local charities are located so that you can continue to donate and make it a habit ( if and when you are able to) and see that benefiting your local community.
I think the key is to look locally and get to know your own community, but here are some websites that may help you if that angle is unsuccessful and if you live in Australia:

Is there a food bank nearby? Or a soup kitchen or emergency shelter? Try those...or just go to a poor neighborhood and leave a bag on the sidewalk.

Anywhere that they have soup kitchens, or perhaps meals on wheels. Check out your own town. There must be somewhere where they feed the homeless. Or perhaps your church could make suggestions.

salvation army or foodbanks, there are foodbanks everywhere, they hand out food to poor people, you can look it up in your local phonebook.
it is a very good way to start off 2007, most people would just toss it out without thinking of others in need.
