Yes it was the best because it's bolt action which made it the most reliable rifle ever and it's still used in some Armies,it has never jammed unlike the US M1 Garand where the Yanks shot all eight rounds in one go and it jammed a lot which made it a rubbish rifle.

Assault rifle, the best is without doubt the AK47. Inaccurate compared to most modern weapons but soldier proof and can take some amount of punishment and still fire no problems.

I would need to agree that the Lee Enfield .303 is one of the finest service rifles issued, extremely accurate and a very good weapon though the heavy kick of it did put a lot of smaller soldiers at unease!

Interesting question!! When I joined the Marines in 1982, we were issued the M-16A1. Then I was issued the M-16 A2, I thought it was a fine weapon, but I ran into a crusty old sergeant who told me that he "lost" his M-16 in Vietnam and took to carrying an AK-47. He said he only carried it because the Marine Corps took away his M-14. After I got out of the Marines, I wandered a bit and ran into an even older more crusty sergeant who told me, that the M-14 was a piece of crap, and then told me what a wonderful weapon the M-1 Garand was...then he showed me his thumb(you WW2 and Korea guys will KNOW what that means). HE told me about a crusty old sergeant who HATED the M-1 Garand and missed his '03 Springfield. So, your choice I guess. You said Enfield, so you may be British, I can't answer for you guys.

The .303 was good but not self-loading. It was followed by the 7.62 mm Self Loading Rifle which I found to be accurate and was resilient. Far more complex weapons are available now and I would go for a Glock or M-16.

I think the M-1 garand was one of Americas best . I've never had a chance to fire a British rifle .

easy. for accuracy i would prefer the lee enfield as it is known to be very accurate but for assault i would go for the m1 carabeen as it rate of fire could just give you the edge you need in combat.

AK-47.
Mikhail Kalashnikov made a 'perfect' weapon. It isn't perfect techonologically. It works. He said his motto is 'Simple and reliable'.
There are much better rifles around, but the AK-47 can be used effectively by anyone.

Probably the M1 Garand. Light, accurate, dependable, easy to maintain in the field. (no tools needed to field-strip)
