My dog has had ear problems in the past and we have taken her to the vets when she has scratched it and made it bleed. The vets said that it wasnt ear mite and that if i was my other dog would have it too.

My other dog hasnt got anything wrong with his ears but now she has scratched her ear so much it is really red and bleeding in parts. Little bumps have come up round the ear and she is walking lob-sided because her balance is being affected.

What do you think it is and is there anything we can do to help it until we can get to the vets tomorrow or at least book an appointment tomorrow?

Thanks guys - your help is much appreciated!!!

Thanks for the advice everyone and as for saying you can only assume i am lying about trying to get an emergency vet (Fenland Fowl) i have tried my very best to get a vet to see her.

I love my dogs and wouldnt dream of letting her continue to suffer - not only is there a cost issue (with it being so close to Xmas and so far away from payday) there is also the issue that the vets are already called out as otherwise i wouldnt be getting through to an answer machine asking me to leave a message and someone will get back to me which they havent. I got through to a call centre on the other occasion when i tried to get somewhere with Pet Plan who i have insurance with(i LOVE MY DOGS!!) Thanks for letting me know the law but saying that someone is a liar is harsh - thanks Dane Lover for your advice too, if you put you were a lab technician that's fine by me - i dont know you and neither does Fenland Fowl so no-one should be calling you a liar!!

Thanks again everyone for your advice!!

You should call the vet office and schedule earliest Appointment after New year day.
IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE, IF YOU JUST WAIT.
Now your poor dog ears itch to her death and it is bleeding, in the meantime put a doggie E-collar around her neck to stop her scratch her ear and head raw. or bandage her paws to stop the damage.

In this case, you dog's ears have infection due to either ear mites, or clogged ear wax inside, or just bad case of allergy.
We have to check dogs' ears weekly, and use cotton balls to soak up with doggies ear cleaning solution (from petco or petsmart) to clean the external ear canals. DON'T use Q-tips to deep clean or pick any dirt from doggies ears. You could hurt its eardrums. Don't use rubbing alcohol or anything not for doggies, 'cause you can get the solution to its eyes, you will end up with more damages.

Next time, you go to the vet, ask them to show you how to do basic ear cleaning at home.
Regular ear cleaning can save you vet bills in the long run. And bad ear infection can cause hearing loss, obsessive ear/head scratching, her ability to balance, and (nervousness in older dogs).

After you get her ears cleaned up, you can consider No Wheat/Soy/Corn ingredients dog foods for your dogs. Wheat, soy, corn can cause skin allergy and weaken the immune system in many dogs.
Breeds, like Cocker spaniel dogs are very easy to have chronic ear infections, if owners don't do good Ear cleaning.
In this stage, Your dog ears probably smells foul and bad now.
Good luck!

It could be ear mites; is there a dark discharge in the ear? They are contagious to other dogs, which is why the vet said that your other dog would get them too, but not necessarily.

But the balance usually isn't affected unless it's a very bad case. It might be that she has an inner ear infection that may require antibiotics or that she has injured her inner ear with scratching.

You really need advice from a vet. If it were my dog, though, I'd at least take a wipe and •gently* clean the inside of the ear a bit. Olive oil or hydrogen peroxide might be okay; a solution of half water and half vinegar is usually recommended, but since she has scratches that is going to really sting and she's not going to want to have it done. You can use a swap, but *Do NOT* poke the swab down into the ear canal! You could do some damage. I'd also put some antibiotic cream on the bloody scratches.

Good luck!

It could be ear mites or it could just be an infected ear. If you see alot of dark brown/black crud in her ear canal - then it is probably mites. You can gently wipe in her ear with olive oil, or mineral oil. Pet stores have medicated cleaners for dogs ears also that will help either mites or infection until you can get her to the Vet. Use your finger on a paper towel - not Q-tips. Be gentle - ear infections hurt. Try to keep her from scratching her ear as much as you can. Call the vet. Good luck

Your dog could have an ear infection. It would explain the scratching. The bumps would be from her scratching it so much. Just keep an eye on her and try not to let her scratch. I know that's hard to do (I have a dog who does the same thing).

Some pet stores might be open today. Check to see if they have an ointment that you can temporally put on her ear until you can get her to the vet.

Good luck.

I have 5 dogs...one who has repeatedly had ear mites, while the others have not.
Furthermore, another one had repeat ear infections... which resulted in us having surgery done for her last year. Her ear canal was small & twisting causing natural oils/waxes to build up which would lead to the ear infections.
Allergic reaction & hair follicles can also cause the ears to become irritated on dogs.
For short term releif of pain, you may try childrens benadryll. I will give 1/2 a dose to my smaller dog & a full dose to my larger dogs to help them relax (if they have been injured, are in pain or have been stung by ants/bees/wasps)
Try inserting a small cotton ball just inside the ear (not too deeply) until you get to the vet. If bleeding from the ear (be it from scratching or infection) is left untreated, it can cause a middle ear infection.
Good luck.

HI
It sounds like an ear infection, my poodle does this. I'd just leave it and try to stop her from scratching, it could also be a yeast infection and they itch like crazy. Sorry but I have found that when you mess with dog ears it usually turns out to be something else and you could make it worse. If you have one of those collars that are plastic and big put it around her, I am not sure if stores are open today but PETCO carries them, this will help her not to put any more scratches on her until you get her to the vet.

Dogs don't usually get ear mites. This dog needs to go to the vet and possibly have an ear culture done to see what type of infection/fungus/yeast you are dealing with.
Do not put water or anything in the ear. This could make things worse.
Ear issues can be caused by a lot of various things including food. If you are feeding a low quality food with corn, wheat, soy or beet pulp in it that could very well be the reason this dog keeps getting ear issues.

It could be an ear infection. Your dog is scratching at it cuz it bothers her. Now since she is walking lopsided, her balance is off, just like what could happen to a human. It also could be allergies that are making your dog scratch at her hear and the bleeding could have come from something getting hurt from the scratching and caused her balance to be off. Take her to the vet to have them check it out for you.

He may have fleas or an ear infection. Or a tick has lodged inside his ear. Do not poke it. Do not put water in it. Keep an eye on it. See if he stops or if it does go red. Then take to vet is infection or red.
