Is there a reason why I can't find any books to help me learn Arabic in any local library and no-one teaching Arabic in the area when there are many sources on less spoken languages?

Please help.

Also, if you learn standard Arabic does it relate easily to other Arabic speaking countries or are there many varieties?

Thanks :)

I expect the reason is no-one has asked. Why not ring around your local colleges for evening classes. From what I understand it is almost impossible to learn from books, mainly because of the different alphabet and writing direction, and there are many dialects although most are at least vaguely comprehensible to others, so to speak.

That's from an old friend who spent many years in Saudi and picked up the local lingo "by ear".

Hope that helps.

hi ... its very hard 2 learn Arabic , cuz Arabic language is very complicated ... even we ( i mean the arabs ) dont talk or use Classical Arabic in our daily life.Every Arabic country has a different accent ( like accents in : Syria,Lebanon,Jordan,Egypt & Gulf countries), if u had learned Arabic u can understand most of the words they use .
u need a person can talk Arabic fluently 2 teach u Arabic speaking .By the way, there r just two languages in the world u must read & write from the right 2 the left , The Arabic Language & Hebrew.
So .. u cant learn Arabic by ur-self or using books !!!
Dont be sad about this , even i was born in Arabian countries , living with them all my life ( i'm Arabian 100%) still having some problems using Arabic! lol

I learned Arabic from classes given in Aden by an Italian nun. When I felt confident to speak to local Arabs they complimented me on my accent and said I spoke like a Syrian which they said was a very good sort of accent to have.

a friend from egypt once expained to me that though he could understand any arabic there are different versions, egyptian arabic and so on.

check to see if there is any dvd's or computer prograns that teach arabic in the library. i would think that it would be very hard to pronounce the words using only a book

Your best bet is to ask the librarian. It may be that these resources exist at another branch, in the same area, and can be ordered in for you.
