The fear of the Lord, is not one where you shake in your boots, like you just seen a ghost. It means to have a deep respect and awe for God. Stop and think how you would feel if today you met the Creator of the universe.

If you want an explanation of the entire chapter (Isa. 11), that will take more time than I have at the moment (but I would be happy to - if so please say this again as "details"). But I can briefly explain "the fear of the Lord."

My friend's father explained it to him in this way:

"Would you be afraid to punch your best friend in the face?"

His son gave him a puzzled look, but answered, "Yes, I would."

"Is that because your friend is a physically intimidating person, and you're afraid he would injure you?"

"Well, no . . . "

"But you still wouldn't do it."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I might lose my best friend."

"That's the same sense in which we fear God. Really, he is our best friend. We respect and love him, and cherish our relationship with him. And we fear doing anything that might jeopardize or damage that relationship in any way. So we avoid doing things that would displease him."

Again, let me know if you want an explanation of the whole chapter. I was just studying it in depth, but I would also like to get some sleep tonight. I could look back over my research and post more tomorrow if that's what you're looking for.

Or, if you don't post anything else in your details, I will assume that this was the kind of answer you wanted.

Isaiah 11:3 His delight is in the fear of the Lord, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;

Deuteronomy 6:13 You shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him, and shall takes oaths in His name

Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”

From the scriptures quoted above you will notice that the Lord Jesus in Luke 4:8 quoted from Deuteronomy 6:3 but He changed the word 'fear' to 'worship'. Jesus has taken fear of the Lord to be worship of the Lord. So to fear the Lord is to worship Him.

Solomon and David tell us the Fear of the Lord is wisdom. It is to rightly know and submit to Him and to have a sense of awe at His majesty. Is 11 is speaking of Jesus who would have a perfect fear of the Lord. He said many times that He had come to do the will of His Father. He also taught us that we should fear God not men and this is just what He did as He obeyed God even as men put Him to death on the cross. Even in the garden when He was so troubles that He sweat blood His perfect fear and love for God was seen as He said "not my will but thy will be done"

FEAR is an incorrect translation of the origianl hebrew. The original writers most probably meant AWE or WONDER. This has happened alot in the Bible - for example in the story of creation the Hebrew word (that we have taken to mean 'day') was actually IOM meaning PERIOD OF TIME. It could have been a day, but it could also have been a year. A decade, a century etc. Therefore, God created the world in 7 periods of time, not necessarily 7 days. I hope that helps
