just wrap in foil and leave for an hour or so depending on size of the potato

First, select a large potato, such as a King Edward. Then, take a skewer or another sharp-pointed instrument, as long as it's clean, and prick the surface of the potato gently.

Oven Users

1.

Hopefully, the oven will already be turned on to about 200°C / Gas Mark 6. If it isn't, do so now.
2.

Brush on a little bit of melted butter or, if you're on a tight budget, vegetable oil.
3.

Wrap the potatoes in oven foil.
4.

Put them on a baking dish in the oven, and leave them for one to two hours.

To check if the potato is done, gently stab it with the skewer; if it feels soft, it's done; if it's hard, come back later. If it's mushy, throw the potato away and get your mother to cook them next time.

Microwave Users

Put the potato on a microwave-proof dish, put the microwave on to full power, and cook the potatoes (one at a time) for 8 - 10 minutes each. Microwaved potatoes are hot. Very hot. Always wear oven gloves if you want to handle them.

The Fun Bit

Any jacket potato must be filled, otherwise it wouldn't be a jacket potato. Anything can be used for a filling... and be adventurous; but remember, you are going to have to eat the end product. Once you have chosen the filling, simply split the potato into two lengthways; spread a little butter over the insides of the potato, and pour the filling over the top. An alternative method is to scoop out the potato from the skin, and mash it up with the filling, before scooping it back in. This method is particularly favoured by children.

Here are some favourite fillings to make the perfect jacket spud:

*

Grate lots of cheese, sprinkle over the potato, let it melt, and eat. You could even cook up a can of beans, and pour them over the dish as well.
*

Cottage cheese is a favourite for those on a diet. If you have the time, you could add bits of herbs into the cottage cheese. Pineapple also gets mixed into the cheese occasionally.
*

Opening up a tin of tuna and mixing it with a little mayonnaise and maybe a bit of sweetcorn results in a sloppy mess that is also a good accompaniment for your cooked potato.
*

Chilli Con Carne is yet another sloppy filling. Being tasty, spicy, smelly and exceptionally messy means that you may need lots of napkins and mints.
*

Coleslaw is a bizarre mixture of cabbage, carrot, onion and mayonnaise but works surprisingly well in the humble potato.
*

Personal choice is the magic of the jacket potato - you can eat it with whatever you want.

You need to do the following
2 large Desirée potatoes, 8-10 oz (225-275 g) each
a little olive oil
rock salt, crushed
a little butter
salt and freshly milled black pepper
Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 5, 375°F (190°C).
First you need to wash the potatoes and dry them very thoroughly with a cloth, then leave them aside to dry as much as possible. If you're using ready-washed potatoes you need not do this, as the high heat will purify them. Next, prick the skins a few times with a fork, then put a few drops of olive oil over each one and rub it all over the skin. After that, rub in some crushed salt – this will draw out the moisture from the skin and, together with the oil, provide more crunchiness.

Now place the potatoes straight on to the centre shelf of the oven and let them bake for 1¾-2 hours, or until the skins are really crisp.

When you are ready to serve, slit each potato in half lengthways and top with the butter and seasoning. Serve immediately because, after you remove jacket potatoes from the oven, they lose their crispness very quickly, so don't let them hang around.

OR Ingredients
2 large baked potatoes, 8-10 oz (225-275 g) each (click here for recipe)
1 leek about 4 inches (10 cm) long, trimmed and cleaned
1½ oz (40 g) mature Cheddar, coarsely grated
1 x 80 g pack Ail & Fines Herbes Boursin
1 tablespoon from the top of the milk or single cream
salt and freshly milled black pepper
Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 4, 350°F (180°C).

You will also need a baking sheet measuring 12 x 10 inches (30 x 25.5 cm).

To prepare the leek, slice it almost in half lengthways, then fan it out under a running tap to wash away any trapped dirt. Now slice each half into four lengthways, then into ¼ inch (5 mm) slices. After that, put the Boursin into a medium-sized bowl and cut the potatoes in half lengthways. Protecting your hands with a cloth, scoop out the centres of the potatoes into the bowl containing the Boursin, add the milk or cream and season well with salt and freshly milled black pepper. Now quickly mash or whisk everything together, then pile the whole lot back into the potato skins. Now scatter the leeks on top, followed by the grated Cheddar – pressing it down lightly with your hand – then place on the baking sheet and bake in the oven for 20 minutes or until the leeks are golden brown at the edges and the cheese is bubbling.

Wash the potatoes first, then pierced them with a fork or a knife both sides. Put them in cooking foil and then place in a hot oven (200 degrees) and leave them for about an hour and 15 minutes.

Wash your potatoes and dry well. Wipe oil over the skin. Cut a cross in the top - this will prevent them exploding! Rub course seasalt over it - you can always knock it off before eating - so be generous. Ideally it should be raised off the baking pan or straight on to the rack at 180 degrees and baked for about an hour, but check your potato after say 45 mins because ovens differ and so do potatoes.

Best of both worlds: put them in the microwave for 5 minutes, meanwhile heating your oven as hot as it will go. Then 5 mins in the hot oven will leave the potato with a nice crispy skin in a fraction of the time!

A jacket potato should have crispy skin and a hot fluffy inside ready for plenty of butter. When you cook them in a microwave or wrap them in tin foil, you are boiling them in their own juice. Not as good. Rub skins with olive oil and salt, stick a steel skewer through and cook for approx 1 hour at 200c. You can tell when it is cooked because you can squeeze the potato and it will spin on the skewer.

Scrub your potatoes, rub them in olive oil and salt then bake in the oven for about 1 hour sometime 1hr 30 at about gas mark 5, I think thats about 180-200 C.

If you have any spare forks then you can stick them through the middle to help get the heat to the middle and cook quicker.
Oh and don't forget to score the top so the skin does not eplode.

turn oven on to preheat, wash potato, stab it a few times put it in the oven and leave it there for a while - varies according to size of spud. If you half cook in microwave it doesn't take long to crisp up in oven and is soo much better than a microwaved one!
Enjoy!!
