Rommel was very popular. Even the generals of the Allied forces had a very high regard for him. Many books were written about him. But there were also brilliant German generals like Guderian, von Rundstedt, von Manstein, Heinrici. Yet very little were written about them, except for a few pages in many WW2 history books?.

No doubt he was a soldier's General, much to the dismay of his staff as he led from the front & was always out scouting instead of planning in the HQ.

His rise to "stardom" within Germany was mainly a result of Josef Goebbel's propaganda machine as Hitler wanted a hero to boost the morale of the German people.

The other generals mentioned are good but most fell into disgrace because of their courage to speak their minds & disobey Hitler's insane orders.

The desert fox that says it all he was a brilliant Field Marshal the only reason he was defeated was lack of supplies. Most of these guys were not Nazi's they were soldiers in the German army.

Rommel was mentioned more by the press so that the so called defeat of Rommel by Monty looked like a bigger deal than it was.

He was able to do a lot with very little in terms of equipment and supplies. He was also killed for trying to take out Hitler and I am sure that helped his stature in the West.

He was by all accounts a charismatic general, he was intelligent, and was an honorable soldier. Even general Patton admired "the bastard". (his words, not mine...)

He called for the Glory of Germany, and he was true to his country and loved it. He was smart, and respected by his enemy and his friends. He was honest and sincere.
