You have to serve in the Korean army? Are you going to be a KATUSA and work directly with American soldiers or are you going to be part of the Korean army that doesnt work AS directly with the Americans? Because I served in Korea for a year as an American soldier and I can tell you that being a KATUSA is waaaay easier than being in the normal Korean army. Hope that helps
And skystrike, I would like to know what Army you were in that you didnt have to pay taxes, got free healthcare for life (you only get that if you retire out of the Army).. well basically, all of your "pros" are completely ridiculous so I am guessing that you were in and most likely got kicked out for some sort of personality/mental problem or you probably couldn't pass the ASVAB to save your life so you couldn't even get in. Pretty much all of your cons are ridiculous too. So, I hope it helps you to rant about something that you obviously disagree with but come on, you wouldn't even be able to say all of your nonsensical ramblings without the millions of soldiers that have served.

If I remember correctly the Korean army is conscripted . Sucks to be you . Here in America service is by choice , although sometimes I think conscription may be a good idea .
PRO's - service to your country, learning something new , physical training .
CON's - marching ( I've seen the way you guys march ), army pay, being treated badly by superiors who made the military their career .

I am almost at the end of my two-year military service as a special forces signaler and yes, even though many people feel it is a complete waste of time, it is a necessary evil for small countries eg Sweden, Israel, Singapore and your country who need to defend themselves against their neighbours. (I mean, come on, no one would want enemy invaders to rape our sisters and girlfriends while we watch helplessly!)
The pros of military service is that it builds initiative, discipline as well as a killer body. In Singapore, the two-year military service is looked upon as a rite of passage for Singaporean youths - we are much more mature upon completion of service. I understand for Korea you can enlist any time between age 18 to 28. Personally I feel it would be better to get it over with soon.

You probably aren't going to enjoy yourself with that attude.
Military can be a place where you make great friends, see new stuff, learn about yourself.
Or you can be a slacker for 2 years and they will be more than happy to put you out the gate (so to speak).
It's like anything else in life - if you tell yourself it's gonna suck, it will

how many people answering here actually know the KOREAN military? more than half of the answers are just unrealistic.
pros:
-less money to need
-place to sleep
-place to eat
-food
-discipline
-killer body
-confidence
-ability to keep a cool head under any circumstances
-certain skills that differ each branch
-fresh air, almost no pollution
-pride
cons:
-less money EARNED
-hardship(this could be a pro)
-humiliation(as a private)
-danger of death in action(especially frontline infantry)
-goodbye to your friends, girlfriend(s), parents, teachers, everyone you could possibly think of
-anything you could possibly think of doing, you cannot do it freely
(going to the restroom, sleeping, blablahblah). more restrictions and punishment and discipline than you could possibly think of(bit different from american military, you should know that)
aside from that, very very rigorous training program

There should be no military conscription like in Costa Rica. They seem to be the only civilized people. But if there is to be one because of the level of our incivility, then all citizens ought to bear the responsibility EQUALLY.

It's a good way to start out. You learn discipline and team work. These are things you can take with you in other parts of your life.
I know kids who have used it to settle themselves down so that they could get their heads together for college.
All in all, it's a good experience
