There are different areas on the tongue that can help you distinguish how bad you have lost your ability to taste. For instance, salty flavours are registered on the tip of your tongue, sweet, on the side.
Most answers are correct, anything that has affected your nose and sinuses lately may be the cause of your problems. Whether it be a cold, flu, hayfever, medications. Hopefully it should pass however you need to get it investigated if it has not resolved within two weeks so that a doctor could look for alternative reasons.
Good luck.

You probably have or have recently had a bad cold or sinus infection. Not much fun because it sure takes the pleasure out of eating. When it comes back though you learn to appreciate your senses a lot more. I was unable to taste or smell for a whole month one time and thought I would lose my mind. Something so simple we take for granted. I hope you get them back soon.

It could be as simple as you having the flu, or as the other person said smoking can also diminish sense of smell and taste.
If you other symptoms, other than aches and pains (flu) then you need to see your doctor.

The taste and smell region of your brain has problem or nerve might have blocked energy flow. Whatever may it be go to an expert acupuncturist and your problem will be mostly solved. Medicines will hardly help, hence need not think of.

It sounds like sinusitis. I would go get a referal to see a speacialist if things do not become better in a week. You could have admoids inyour nose preventing you from tasting and smelling which is entirely different from sinusitis.

since taste and smell are related senses, it is most likely to do with your nasal passages. smoking is a definate culprit, giving up usually results in the return of these senses. go to a doctor to check it out.

Smoking, having a cold/flu? Had chicken pox lately? (a friend lost all his sense of smell due to that and it never came back)
