Question Details:Let's serve up the problem first: I have very minor dandruff; I don't get snowflake sized dandruff flakes floating around in my hair. However, when I run my fingers through my hair, I can feel that my scalp has a rather rough texture. Occasionally, I come across tiny, crusty bumps on my scalp that when removed by scratching it off (I know it sounds gross but bear with me) resemble yellowish, clearish, whitish, translucent plugs. If I periodically scratch off the tiny crusty blip, it becomes a sort-of sore scab that when picked off leaves blood. When I visually examined my scalp up close with a mirror, I saw that my scalp has an irregularly rough texture with what seems like little pieces of dandruff on the verge of falling off.

I would really appreciate if someone could tell me what is wrong with my scalp! It's very frustrating to find a shampoo that is right for me. Answerers, PLEASE give SERIOUS consideration to your response.

Here's my input on all this:
I seriously doubt that I have a dry scalp. Although it may be plausible, how could one explain the extent of oiliness in my hair a day after I wash it? (It smells oily, too, and the dandruff flakes get bigger and more noticeable)

I had the same problems. A couple of months I started using Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo, and it was working very well at first, but then after a while, I stopped using it, and switched to using Matrix Essentials Actrol Shampoo. You can only get that shampoo from a salon, and is pretty expensive, like $18.00 for 16.9 FL OZ. The Matrix Shampoo works very well. It's a dandruff shampoo, and my scalp is so much healthier now, and no more flakes come out of my hair if I run my fingers through it. I would ask your stylist about any other shampoos that would work for your scalp, as they will more than likely give better answers. But the shampoo worked for me, and I recomend it.
Good Luck!

Dandruff is a condition in which flakes of dead skin are shed from the scalp. The flakes may be yellow and oily, or white and dry. The scalp normally sheds some dead skin cells. Dandruff results when it sheds thick layers of them. Physicians do not fully understand what causes the condition, and most people have it at some time. In most cases, mild dandruff can be controlled by washing the hair frequently. Dandruff does not cause baldness.

A condition called seborrheic dermatitis may produce severe dandruff and a red, itchy scalp. Dandruff shampoos help treat the problem. If the condition continues, a physician should be consulted.

My younger sister and I had the same symptoms you are displaying and it turned out that we both had psoriasis. It's normally a condition of the skin on arms. legs, etc., but it can also affect the scalp. You should see a dermatologist for a real diagnosis. If it is psoriasis, the dermatologist will prescribe a special shampoo for you to use every day. In the meantime, try to avoid scratching you scalp because if it is psoriasis it can get under your nails and infect the nail beds causing you to have really bad looking, sort crusty and flaky nails. Before you try these bootleg home remedies that people are giving you, go and see a dermatologist.

first things first. drink at least eight glasses of water a day. it will take about three weeks to see a difference. Then the products I suggest is Sebastian, shampoo, finishing products, conditioners, anything you need. Sold in best salons and on the web. www.sebastian.com This problem also makes me think you have oily face skin. Any shampoo will give you the best results if diluted before use and left on to set on the hair about ten minutes, then rinsed and rinsed with cool water, never hot. use about one half oune shampoo mixed with 8 ounces of water. Towel blot you hair dry and use your conditioner spairlingly. about half a dimes worth and leave in for five minutes, rinse cool water again. Sebastian has a leave in conditioner called Potion 9, it is the top of the line, that leaves the hair soft to the touch and smells sooo good. If you have oily skin try neutrogena soap two to three times, again with cool water only, rinse really good too. Libriderm advanced therapy moisturizing lotion after each washing, it is non greasy, dermatology recommended also sold at Walmart's for around seven or so bucks. good luck
