I know that depression is a common "disorder" or whatever you want to call it. But I have been feeling this way since "forever." I know it may be my upbringing because of the parents divorce, child neglect, child abuse, child molestation... my self-esteem has never really been enough to help me accept myself.

Now I feel like an idiot because I know there are people out there who have it worse than I do.

I have already spoken to people but because they are my friends or close acquaintances they tell me the same things over and over.

"That I am going through a phase."

But it's not going away....

Sweety, I'm sorry you feel this way, but I am the same way. I have suffered with it for 5 years. Please got to the doctor and get on a good anti-depressant. Cymbalta is a really good one. Good luck.

You need to seek the help of a medical professional. You are not going through a phase and that is very poor advice that your so called friends are giving you. There are a lot more treatments available now than there used to be. Clinical depression does not go away ever but if you are depressed because of your upbringing it is what you call "situational depression". If you are placed on an antidepressant then my advice to you would be to also seek out a professional counselor (not one of those friends you are talking about). I am sure that you have heard about suicide related to taking anti depressants and there is an explanation for this. When you begin to take antidepressants the chemicals that are lacking in your brain begin to be replenished (usually takes about a month) and you begin to focus better and start figuring out what is really bothering you. If you are not in therapy then you are not being taught the proper way to deal with all of these new revelations you are having about why you feel the way you do and many people take the suicide route because they feel that their situation is hopless. If you are opposed to taking antidepressants because of the bad publicity or because of (unfortunately) the stigma related to taking them then please at least seek out a professional counselor who can help you work through these feelings so you can go on and live a happy life. It is not a quick fix though. These thoughts and feelings have taken a lifetime of hurting to develop so it will take a long time to work through them (sometimes even a few years). For your sake and the sake of those who love you PLEASE find some professional help. You deserve to feel good about who you are.

yeah, i would say you need to seek some help and advice, probably from someone you can trust and open up too, who is not family or friends.

Depression is often a feeling of lack of joy in anything. Don't feel bad that you are sad and there are 'others worse off'. We each have our own path and journey to live so you cannot compare one experience with another persons. We all deal with stuff differently.

Often if you are depressed it will be something tiny that can push you over edge. This is probably because you are already so close to that edge.

With treatment and therapy live can be alot better, although if you are on anti-dep drugs you might have to try a few flavors before you hit your stride.

good luck and get help soon. Being depressed is real and is not a lot of fun.

They tell you the same things because they really do want to help, they just don't know how. Have you ever been to a therapist to talk about your childhood? You don't have to let him prescribe you pills, you just need to regain your self esteem. If you go to a therapist and he tries to force pills on you find another one, you may go through several before you find someone who works for you. Once you get past your past you can begin to realize that the world is a pretty good place.
I've never been through what you have but I have been through depression. Feel free to contact me, I'm not a therapist, just an anonymous person over the internet who will always be honest.

Having dealt with depression all my life, I'm 52 now, I tried dealing with it by myself for like 35 years, finally i went to see my doctor about it, he sent me to see a psychiatrist, he diagnosed me with severe depression. Gave me a prescription for a generic drug called "Sertraline", it's helped me alot.

If i take it every day as prescribed i'm ok. But if i miss 2 or 3 days I start feeling depressed. See a mental health doctor and get on some med's it will help you cope. Also, do some therapy with a counselor, I did and it helped me alot.

It might be time for some anti-depressants. Sometimes the brain doesn't release the chemicals it should and you may need some temporary help...No big deal. If you go see someone just make sure they come with recommendations... somebody good....OK

First of all - have you seriously tried to come out of the depression? It is you and ONLY YOU who should try and come out of this phase.

You can as well take some help meeting a good counselor or a doctor.
