if he wants to play the drums instead of the piano, he isn't going to want to focus.

If he does want to play piano, keep it short, simple. No more than half hour. Have him pratice each day for about 10-15 minutes. Keep an egg timer or somthing handy.

Also, along with basic scales and chords, offer simple sheet music at his level that includes what your trying to teach. The sheet music should be music he likes. If he loves country, then give him popular country music to learn that inculdes that weeks lesson written into it. If he loves classical, rock or any other genre, use that. May be a bit unorthadox, but it will help keep his interest.

Keep the lessons short, repetitive and in installments. Ask the parents if the child is under any medication to control his ADHD.
Make the piano lessons fun and interesting. Use some reward system. Inform him ahead of time what you would give him once he learn a certain lesson. You need a lot of patience.

Does he really want to learn to play? If he doesn't really want to then you are wasting your time. If he does then believe it or not Caffeine is a treatment. It will not make him less hyper but it will help to increase the chemical in his brain he is lacking to help him focus. You might offer him a soda that is sweetened with Splenda (Diet Big Red) and also has Caffeine and then try to work with him about 30 minutes later. Avoid giving him anything sweetened with sugar or Aspartame. Then limit the time of the lessons to 10-15 minutes. And have patience with him. It is not his fault that he cannot focus but if he REALLY wants to learn to play then he can learn to compensate for his disorder. Another suggestion would be that while he is drinking his caffeine you play for him. . . . .if he can hear you play it can be soothing as well as a motivator for him to learn. Lots of luck and I certainly admire your wanting to help him by sharing your gift.

One of my sons has ADHD and the other ADD. I know how trying they can be, but finding something they are truly interested (sports and music for my oldest and computers for my youngest) has proven to be very therapeutic.

hard one, i know people with adhd and the best way to get around this is to see if he really wants to play piano, ask him. if he doesnt then tell his parents that you see no point of teaching him. if he does tell him that if he focuses then he will be sooo much better if he pays attention.

Teach him to play blues, boogie woogie and rock and roll, if you can carry that off it might just channel some of his excess energy and get your place rocking at the same time.
