I'm trying to find the nicest way possible because the stories seem to get worse the more I hear them.

Don't. Just find a reason to excuse yourself. Believe me they probably know their stories are boring--they probably even keep telling them to you over and over just to get rid of you. Or, you could just fall asleep on them.

some people are bad story tellers....but it's rude to point it out....
some-one was telling me a story once and here's an excerpt:
"...and then they asked for my social security number, so i said 'one, two, seven, nine, one....' ".....i couldn't believe this person was spelling out their ss#....how boring and pointless!! i got so frustrated i blurted out "get to the point!"
....i don't know what to tell you....world's full of boring people!

Just as they are about to start, tell them......."I heard that one before, so don't bother repeating it." or just "heard that before!!!"
