I just began a workout routine a week ago in which I run about a mile a day. Before I began this I had been relatively inactive. Tonight I noticed extreme pain in my shins. I assume these are shin splints. Will the pain stop if I continue my workout and strengthen my legs or should I stop for good or for how long? Any help is appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

my coach always said not to run every day, but to bike on off days, to take the impact off of your shins, feet, knees etc.
I always take a day off when my shins hurt.

Yes stop until the pain is gone. I would recommend that you call a gym and ask to speak to a trainer (may be able to talk to one at a public high school too and they won't try to sell you anything) and ask for their advice on how to run without getting shin splints. There is a certain way you can be running that can cause the shin splints and they will be able to tell you how to place your feet (heel toe or mostly on the ball of your feet) and also tell you how to avoid them. As far as treatment I would recommend ibuprofen, advil, alleve or something like that because these pain medications have anti-imflammatory properties that can help with the shin splints rather than taking acetominophen (Tylenol)

For now, run on a soft surface. The grass beside the track is good. Stretch after about 10 minute warm up then again after the run. Ice your shins a couple times a day until the pain subsides. if it is hot where you are, use Tylenol and not Ibuprofen (which can cause kidney problems if not properly hydrated) Good luck!

MSM (methyl sulfonyl methane) 2-8 grams a day may help, but it may take a while. Rest, heat, and analgesic balm may help. Ibuprofen or naproxen are good for otc pain relief. Try swimming for exercise in the meantime.
