I worked in the liquor business in the U.S. for 9 years and I have lived in China, western and eastern areas, for 3 and a half years. You can find Dynasty brand or Great Wall brand Chinese wine, not made from rice, in any large, metropolitan U.S. wine shop that stocks unusual wines, such as Bulgarian, Argentine or Chinese. Don't expect to find such far-corners of the world represented in Joe's 10x20 foot Liquor Store. The Dynasty brand covers a wide range of quality from Carlo Rossi to Fetzer but you are not likely to find more than a few bottles of the lower quality type in a U.S. store.

Here in China, all supermarkets have huge stocks of Chinese wine. Only a few are rice wines. Most are made from grapes. The styles range from sweet and cheap to quite good. The best are from Gansu Province and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonymous Region (China's northwest). They sell for 2 to 20 dollars a bottle and the quality is in line with the price. China is at the top of the world in chemistry application and that is important for modern winemaking.

I am not an expert on import tarrifs but I don't think the small level of Chinese wines in the U.S. is caused by blocking their import. I think it is a market response. Most Americans would find it hard to spend 25 bucks on a bottle of wine from China unless they could taste it first. China does not promote its wines in the U.S. so hardly anyone gets a chance to taste them.

China does not produce any wines of high quality. They make several very simple sugary wines that are pleasing if what you are really after something with sugar. Maybe your neighbor has PTSD?
