I think anyone who has ever struggled to develop new skills and cares about the quality of the work they do, has felt frustrated and self critical from time to time. The world is full of people who will tell you: "You just aren't good at this and you never will be. For your own sake, do something else." Often, this is terrible advice, so try not to let it get you down. If Architectural design is really what you want to do for your career, then you just have to go for it and not let stuff get in your way. It sounds to me like you just need more experience designing. Talent is something you learn, not an innate skill. Once you learn more about design, you will be more confident in your abilities and less self-critical. This will allow you to put even more energy into your course-work and it will create positive feedback.

I am speaking from personal experience. I had a rough time in some of my electrical engineering courses in school because I felt like I didn't know what I was doing. In response I tried to work harder and longer than my classmates and I ended up getting really stressed-out and very depressed and it took me an extra year to graduate. But, I did not breeze-through my courses like I saw so many of my classmates do, and I think I got a lot more out of my education that way. After graduation, now that I have been working and have gained a lot more experience, I am doing great.

well you could pray to G-d to give you a gift for design.

i worked as a designer in my career, and i found that people either have creative ability or they dont.

now i would get design inspiration in the strangest places, i would dream ideas. the solution would come when i was running. or doing something other than work. i think it was the unconscience part of my mind.

now i knew guys who had very good educations but they just were not good designers.

you could try, when you get a difficult design assignment just going out and looking at nature. that is where frank loyld wright got a lot of ideas.

architecture is full of very creative people.

maybe you were meant to be an architectural engineer, if your good at math. the architect comes up with the ideas and you tell him if it can be built or not, and do the detailed engineering design, which is actually more difficult than the architectural concept.

my experience in management is that you either have that gift to design with great ease or you do not. if its not your thing, no big deal you can find something you like more. lifes too short to spend doing what you dont like to do, or what doesnt come naturally to you.

i truly empathise with you, as a manager i had to fire or reassign people who were not good designers. so its best to find this out now while you in school, if you can develop your creativity or if you should try something else.

Good luck!!

To design "things" requires a particular gift of imagination, whether in engineering, architecture, or any other field for that matter.
You seem to be obviously in the wrong field. Persevere and you will become a not very good architect and horribly bored by your choosen profession!
Don't go that way... You will be wasting your life, and you only have one.
Instead, quit architecture, and visit a center of professional orientation. There, they will help you find WHAT you like to do and be good at it. May be in a totally different field, and you may have to start from scratch, but you have time.
Who knows, you may have all the gifts to be a lawyer, or a detective, or a fighter pilot, or even a wizzard gardener!
But in all cases, don't waste your life doing something you do not enjoy fully: you'll have to do that for 40 years or more!

People are good at different things, you just need to find a way to get interested in it, what made you do it in the first place? have a think and go back to basics, perhaps it is the wrong course for you? have you a friend in the class who could help? if so get some pointers, dont get him to do the work or you may as well not bother, but copying the difficult parts may help you complete the question. If other people are at ease it is because they are spending time on it. lock your self in a room for a few days with specific adjendas and you may get back on track. good luck.

Hi,

Keep in mind that people are born with certain skills. Some are born with creativity, and others are born with logical skills. Sometimes though, you might have it - but its just hard to concentrate. I think you ARE good at it, but like me, you need the motivation to do it! Sometimes all you need to do is look at something that will give you IDEAS.

Since you do architecture, why not look at other people's designs and develop your ideas from there? It helps to look at those little things, and decide what you like about them. From there, you can work your way to success!

And just to make you feel better:
WHO CARES about the others in your class! That's their own work! You just concentrate on your own work, and on passing the class!

Good luck!
=)

well you should do something which you enjoy. maybe your mind's not on architecture so you can't concentrate on it completely. you should put your mind to it more and if it is too boring or distracting, switch to something you like.
best of luck and hope this helps
PS- ask your teacher for advice or ask your friends for some ideas.

Its probably because your imagination isn't wide enough, or you cannot focus on the task at hand. Just think widely, nobody minds aslong as it makes a bit of sense.
