Ever try to shave with a saw? Biblical people wore beards because razors were virtually non-existent.

He faithfully followed the Mosaic law. Which prohibited adult men from cutting the extremity of their beards. This in addition to the requirement to have fringes on the bottom of their garments, and a thin blue line at the bottom, identified a Jew, as just that, a Jew. Different, and seperated from the world. Both in dress and grooming, and attitude towards clothing. They were to express modesty in all things, unlike the nations round about them.
It's not that being clean shaven was thought to be bad. It was just a way for God to say: Do this, it will seperate you from others when they see you. The world will know that my people are different.

In the first statue of Jesus in Eight century he was portrayed as a beardless youth.
The bearded Jesus came only in 13th century

he needed it to keep his chin nice, soft and sunburn-free. That was of course all under his beard, but he was kinda spoiled you see, being the son of god and all.
