We shouldn't celebrate any man-made holidays that come from pagan origins. Everything connected to Christmas--the lies, the drunkeness, the commercialism, the pagan origin, and the greediness are not things that our reigning King or his Father approve of. The New Years celebration also has pagan roots and involves excessive drinking.
We should be celebrating only what Jesus commanded Christians to celebrate and that is the "last supper" he had with his disciples on Passover. The Church leaders have failed so many, by not sharing with them this important command from Jesus himself.
Many have no idea when to celebrate it or how.

Christmas only became a celebration due to the things that happened in the bible, so they wouldn't have known about it, The New Year celebrations has always been celebration of the re-birth of the seasons in the Northern hemisphere, and isn't a religious celebration at all.

The Old Testament has different celebrations such as the Feast of Tabernacles, (Jesus was born on the first day of this feast in the year 3757 of the Jewish Calandar and that month is the first month in the Jewish Calandar year) and the Passover. So celebrations are part of God's plan for mankind.
Some people say the date for Christmas was chosen because it was already a Roman public holiday, but is that wrong? Wouldn't this just be commercial and common sense, it allows the Christians to celebrate without causing inconvenience to their customers or employees / employer. Surely it's who you worship, not the day you do it on. Also, what are the day's of the week named after? They get their names from pagen gods.
I think there is a need to avoid the rampant commercialisation, but there is a logic to things like Christmas and Birthdays. God is a god of Love, and one of the fun things to do in life is to give gifts. So Christmas is the day when you can give a gift to everyone in your family, and they give to you. Birthdays are when each person is treated as important as an individual.
Remember that one of the commandments Jesus reiterated was "Love your neighbor as yourself". Surely giving gifts is part of that. After all, wasn't Jesus the ultimate gift to mankind from God?
My advise is this: Enjoy Christmas, New Year, and Birthdays.

St Paul said " ... those who eat anything do so in honour of the Lord ... Those who refuse to eat certain things do so in honour of the Lord ... " (Romans 14: 6) My reading of this is the same applies to celebrating or not celebrating and the giving or not giving of gifts. Whatever you decide, do it in honour of the Lord.

Don't take the Bible as the absolute truth, not everything has to be lived by it after all it was written by man not God. We celebrate Christmas because we are celebrating the birth of Christ (whatever the true date was). We celebrate the New year as a new beginning and with hope in our hearts that the New Year will bring good things to all men, to the renewel of the plants, trees etc.

That doesn't mean anything, because christians are allowed to do anything that is acceptable.
There is nothing evil or wrong with celebratiing Christs arrival into the world any day, you can do it everyday and it wouldn't be wrong, and there is nothing wrong with recognizing a New Year. There is nothing wrong with not doing it either.
So be careful that you do not deceive yourself.
The bible says, whatever you do, do it unto the glory of God.

If you don't want to, don't. There is nothing in the Bible about using a computer to ask questions on Yahoo, either. I myself celebrate Christmas is a commemoration of His birth, and today as a commemoration of His circumcision (Luke 2:21).

The further north you live, the more depressing midwinter becomes. The midwinter solstice is VERY important and has been celebrated for thousands of years.
