Well science has shown that numerous health benifits come from having a cat. The most accepted one is lowering blood pressure by stroking a kitty and simply easing the mind. They also tend to make me very sleepy and sedated.
As far as if she knows, this is coming into question on animal intelligence. I defintely think animals like cats know more than they are given credit for, but I'd say no on this. In you're kitty's mind, a purr or a rub with her head is simply showing she cares for you and is trying to douse out any bad feelings that could lead to a confrination.

Pets can lower stress. That has been proven. (Well, ones that haven't been trained well can actually cause stress.....) They really are loyal friends. Caring for them and reciprocating their love if very satisfying. How is having a good friend not beneficial?

People think cats are aloof because they don't jump up and down and bark. All you have to do is pay attention. Cats are very reactive. They are just more subtle. My cat seems to actually 'read' people and know who the animal lovers are. And when I am sick, or my son too, she insists on laying on us or at least near us even more than usual (even to the point of annoyance). I think they know more than we realize.

I can't sleep without Kaffe somewhere in the bedroom with me... unless I am very tired. he knows this and he snuggles under the blanket to lay beside my leg (half on half off) until I fall asleep. I usually wake up with him gently pawing or licking my face. I would say that Kaffe gives me many health benefits: I am soothed and feel a warmth just looking at him when he is sleeping or resting. I think cats make one feel very peaceful and so that lowers blood pressure and banishes stress. They also give you great delight.

It has been proved that petting an animal will lower blood pressure and will calm us. For people that live alone or people who can not have kids they become our kids. Some one to love.

And I think that animals are allot smarter then we give them credit for. I have a cat that does not like to be hugged and when I do he struggles. But when I am very upset he lets me.
And when I cry he licks off my tears.

They Know when we need them
