They are painted white on top to reflect heat from the sun. This also helps in promoting air plane and other brands as colours appear best against a white substrate.
The lower side in some aircraft is painted, but this and the engines are left as silver (this is not painting. It is a surface treatment for the aluminium) because this too gets hot from internal combustion (any paint in this zone would soot) and the 'silver' conducts the heat to the atmosphere well.
The metal underbelly actually looks very good, giving the aircraft a steely appearance. The portions that do not get hot from combustion perform a tertiary function of (1) absorbing heat from the tyres, and (2) remaining incombustible should the plane catch fire

white colour doesnt absorb the heat from the sun (it reflects back the heat rays from the sun) silver is visiblly brighter in the sunlight and also during the night

the sun's heat.white is bad conductor of heat.the tyres emit strong heat on landing.silver colour too saves from getting burnt from high temperatures generated.it absorbs the high temp.you may search google,msn,yahoo.visit boeing and airbus websites.

WHITE LIGHT IS FORMED WHWN ALL LIGHT RAYS RREFLECTED BACK SO MAY BE B'COZ TO REDUCE THE TEMPERATURE RISE CAUSED BY SUN RAYS ANS SILVER IS LESS REACTIVE AND CHEAPER COMPARED WITH OTHER ALLOYS SO.....
