I have a mixed breed, medium size dog. Her puppies are 7 weeks two days old. I read that on the net its ok to give them away at 7-10 weeks. Then I heard it should be 8-10 weeks. Will it hurt them to be given away at 7 weeks.

i agree with saramine. in addition to what she said, you have to make sure they are weaned from the mother. also, make sure you are able to give them the required shots before giving them out. it will not really hurt them if you give them up by 7 weeks except make sure they are able to be fed away from the mother, not dependent on her milk and are healthy, which i am sure you will be able to tell with the babies in 7 weeks.

Puppies should be at least 8 weeks old.. they need this time to really socialise, play and even fight with the other pups and also its really good to let the mother of the pups pull them into line etc. this helps a lot when later in life as the pups learn manners and with them biting each other in play they soon learn that biting is not good and hurts... other wise they will try to learn this on the new owners..
I would not leave them much older than 10 weeks as they really need to bond and socialise with the new family as well.. these early weeks are very critical.
good luck with the pups.

You have already done too much damage to do them any worse. We did not need any more puppies, thank you.

8 or 9 weeks is the proper time to home your pups.
But you should be finding them proper homes weeks before this.

And your female should be spayed when the pups are 5-6 weeks old, as this is the time they should be weaned and seperated from the mother.

I understand puppies must be well past weaning before getting parted with their mother. All the dogs I got up to now were between 12-16 weeks old when I first had them.

Happy New Year

Depending on the breed the time differs, it is better to wait till the pup is weaned, or at least able to eat food from its bowl rather than relying on nutrition soley from its parent. There is also the question of readiness by law, has the pup been seen by a vet, has it been vaccinated for all the usual dog problems Parvo Kennel cough hepatitis etc. Responsible breeders usually ensure these factors have been attended to prior to any sale. This prevents the dog falling sick, dying or having to be put down because the new owner has no idea of what is involved. Veterinary saloons have informnation on all breeds even mutts that can be given to the new owners so they are informed on a pups needs. Avail yourself of this information and pass it on when making a sale. Always be prepared to follow up your dog's offspring to see that it is surviving and is being cared for. That is called responsible breeding and dog ownership. It is normal for the veterinary costs to be passed on to the buyer. Always advise the new owner what food you have been giving and even give a small amount away to them to feed the pup prior to them buying their own. I trust you have found my input helpful

Depends on the breed really and the puppy. Well grown puppies may be ok at 7 weeks but smaller weaker ones really should go after 8 week.

the experts on dog behavior, Dr. Ian Dunbar, Dr. Patricia McConnell, etc. recommend that pups stay with their litters and dam until a minimum of 8 weeks old. This is important because the puppy has a chance of learning bite inhibition at this time.

As long as the puppies have been weaned from their mother and are eating on their own, they can be given away anytime after about 7 weeks.

It is best to wait until they are at least 8 weeks old to take them away from their Mom.
