Besides medication like Xanax and talking with a professional (which are a good start but not permanent solutions), what would you knowledgeable people recommend to lessen the likelihood of panic attacks?
(i have a particular trigger which is basically unavoidable, though it only comes up every couple weeks or so.)

If it were me, I'd cut back of caffeine, meditate, and find out about exposure and response prevention as a treatment for panic disorder. I'd also look into taking an SSRI antidepressant.
Have you seen a psychiatrist? I wouldn't trust a family doctor, especially one who just gives me a bottle of Xanax and a pat on the shoulder. My mom used to have panic attacks and it was getting so she was afraid to leave the house for fear she'd have one. You don't want that to happen.

Most panic steams from anxiety, or a hightened sontant state of anxiety (leads to panic attacks) anxiety is caused by depression 95% of the time.
Suffered myself for years. Here is how I broke the cycle for good. Abbreviated....
1. Vitamins, extra vit. B-12 and magnesium.
2. Good nights sleep at same time each night.
3. SAD light therapy. minimum 30 minutes total per day, 2xs per day, broekn into two parts.
4. 1000 MG fish or omega oils daily.
5. exercise at least 5 times per week. Intensly, 3 times per week.
6. SAM-e 200-400 MG daily.
7. Low fat and minimal carb intake.
I hit from all angles and it's gone in under 5 days, every time!
This method cures anyone who has the discipline to do it! 90% of people want the magic drug, but for those who care, this works. Depression can be cured naturally. DRugs only patch the problem until it causes something else to go wrong. The cycle wil never end with drugs. I've been there

I would highly suggest medication. Mine really helps me. I don't know what your triggers are so that might be helpful to understanding your exact problem. Try to understand what that trigger is really stemming from. Don't do that when it is happening, because that may overwhelm you. Think about what it is when you are calm and not in that mindset. Then see if it is something you can or have to deal with or if it is something you can avoid. I see a psychologist and I take nerve medicine, so both help me a lot. I would suggest that to help you work through those trigger moments and to lessen your anxieties. Good luck and I hope you get this all worked out.

How about different exercises to calm yourself. First off work out practice scenarios and reactions for your triggers. You might try counting too. Whenever I am overwhelmed I count. Yes, it sounds weird, but counting backwards from 300 by 17s takes a large amount of concentration which helps me focus and not freak. Yoga is also good.
