it is true that God has a plan for you but it is up to you to choose to follow it or not. that is where your free will comes in. your choice of what to do with your life and what to make of yourself is your choice. an example is what your parents dream for you and what they want you to accomplish in life. now, if you decide to do drugs and mess up your life, then you have made a decision on your path. in the end, you will find out that there is a plan for all of us in this earth, how we decide what to do with it or not is up to us. it is funny, sometimes, that we don't know God's plan for us as we go through life. but as we age in life, we find out that there had been many a plan and we may have strayed so many times throughout of lives, but God always helps us find our way to the right road and gives us the grace to find it. we are not perfect living beings but we know what is right and what is wrong and even if we stray, just have the strength to find the right path back.
so, go now and choose your path in life and remember, you choose where you go. but never forget, you have a line with God who will always help you if ever you need a direction. follow your heart and goodness will be with you.

God has a plan for every member of the human race. One that would bring the greatest joy and fulfillment if the believer is willing to follow the path. The Bible says: All things work together for the good of those who love the Lord. The key word is plan, not path, not road but plan as in possibility. We do have free will to make choices as well as bearing the consequences of those choices. Take something as common as divorce. God does not condone divorce. We choose our mates based on attraction and emotion, rarely do we seek God's guidance. We are free to choose who we will but then when the troubles come we must also bear the pain that divorce brings. His plan is never to bind two in marriage that will end in divorce but we are certainly free to choose that path if we wish.

Haven't you ever watched the Matrix, same thing basically. God has a Plan for us and we may have a destiny, But God knows us so much, he knows what we are going to chose. So we need to understand why we made the choices we did, and make right what was wrong. If there was no free will, there would be no free thinking, and the plan set for us would be more like a path with high walls on either side, no deviation and not thinking understanding or learning.

Some would say that while we have free will if we carefully discern God's will for our life then we can follow the plan God has made. But that God will not force Her plan on us, thus leaving us our free will -- a will to choose to follow God's plan.

Just because he has a plan for us doesn't mean that we're going to choose to follow it.
When you hold your child for the first time, your plan for them is to be healthy, go to school, get good grades, get married, have babies, and become the President, etc. but it doesn't mean that he/she is going to choose that path.
God's relationship with us us very much like a normal parent/child relationship. I believe He has a plan for my life, but I guarantee you if I get in my car and drive it off a cliff tonight that His plan would not be fulfilled because I had free will.

I think you might be getting mixed up in the definitions of the words.
Firstly, Christianity is about restoring our fallen will. The Bible says that people are sinners from birth. They are opposed to God and to his command to love him and to love one another. People's will isn't free, it's enslaved to sin.
God's plan for you is to repent from your sin. That means saying "no" to your opposition to God, and saying "yes" to putting God as the ruler of your life. For this to happen requires intervention from God. He reaches out to you (for example through your Christian friend) and makes the choice available to you.
I hope this clarifies some things. Please consider.

Gods plan is for everyone to return to him. His plan is for man to have joy. To have free will only means you have the will to choose right from wrong. The concequences of your choices are yours alone to bear.

If our lives are subject to some unknown plan we might as well sit back and take the ride. Nothing we do will make a difference

Yes it can, we as Christians do believe in free will and that God gives us the choice to choose what we will make of our lives. But since he is omnipotent and timeless, i mean he knows what we are going to choose but he didn't make the choice for us.

The kind of free will humans have is only about the way they react to things, not about the way things happen to them.
God controls the second bit.
