I don't have all-terrain tires for my Mini but want to go up to Tahoe in a couple of weeks. Highway 80 is usually kept really clear. Would you drive it without winter tires in a car as low as the Mini? I also don't know if my car takes chains because of how low to the ground it is. Do you think it's a safe drive as long as it's not snowing?

Donner Pass is a little over 7000' in elevation. You may want to see what it's like before you go. Also check the weather around Lake Tahoe on the highways that take you the rest of the way. Those are high elevations and we're having a lot of snow this winter on the west coast.

You can manage with any kind of tires as long as you have chains. Chains are a (expletive deleted) to put on, and they'll last about 10-20 miles before they start breaking on the pavement and slapping the side of your car.

If you don't have chains, you may want to consider La Jolla beach in San Diego.

You can put traditional tires on your car with the stock wheels. It came from the factory with performance run flats in the sport package, I imagine it was not good at all in the snow. You can replace them with traditional sport tires of the same size, or put on all season tires which will help in the snow. Run Flats will NOT give a more luxurious ride. They are, however, a very important safety feature of the car and it would be a shame to lose them. My advice would be: find all season run flats of the same size and use them. In defense of run flats-aimed at the previous answer. Take a look through your local or nearby newspapers and take note of every death that occured when a disabled car (flat tire) that was hit by either a drunk driver or distracted driver on the highway. The safety factor of these tires FAR outweigh the extra cost.

No way. If it snows you may not even be allowed up there without snow tires and chains.
