drops in something like 'I know you'll be terrific in whatever you do', or 'Please give me a call when you're in college and tell me how you're doing', etc., etc.

What does that crap mean anyway?

HE WANTS TO KEEP BEING FRIENDS & KEEPING IN TOUCH DOESNT NECESSARILY MEANS HE WANTS A SECOND CHANCE FROM YOU BUT IT MIGHT MEANS THAT HE'S TRYING TO KEEP YOU FROM LOVING SOMEONE ELSE. MEN USE THAT METHOD. AS IF THEY STILL CARE ABOUT YOU SO THAT YOU WILL STILL LOVE HIM WHEN THE TRUTH IS HE REALLY DOESNT CARE ;)

Keep in contact. At least that's what he says he wants in the moment. It could also mean keep in contact in case we can have something again. But don't analyze that stuff too much. There's more to be concerned about anyway when it comes to breakups.

Maybe he tries to soften the blow but honestly he needs to realize he is being annoying and hurtful. Don't see any hope in there... i always tend to read hope into things i shouldn't. He might just be polite or maybe he does want to be friends with you eventually but i kinda doubt it. Just ignore it.

He is trying to add a better ending to your break up!!! He does not mean it...he wants to leave your relationship in a pleasant manner!

It's rhetorical. He doesn't really expect you to do anything of the sort. Just parting phrases.

It means absolutely nothing. It is not to be taken seriously. It is just empty air, designed to make him look sophisticated.
