My husband was 'let go' because of age and the company was
downsizing. He has been in the insurance business for 35 years.
Lately he has become 'very' depressed because he's tried several leads which didn't work out.
Does anyone know how he can find work in Insurance, because
no one seems interested because of his age.
He is now 68, but in excellent health, very active and wants to keep working.
Many people have offered him positions but they have truned out to be a 'big' scam.
He has lost money from these 'so-called' previous offers.
He's a wonderful guy, a hard worker and really knows his work.
Most companies are not interested in hiring these 'old' folk,
and self employment is 'really' hard in the insurance business.
Can anyone give some advice.

Your best bet, assuming he has a producer's license, is for him to go into sales. He can do it part time, he can use his experttise, he can use his contacts and people skills - and retirees make EXCELLENT part time producers. The best salesman I ever worked with, was "retired" from his day job.
It doesn't hurt any agency to take him on, because it's straight commission - so they're likely to do it.
If he DOESN'T want to sell, then he's going to have to push his computer skills - all the systems he knows, how he's willing to work in a paperless office, etc, because the BIGGEST red flag with the old guys, is that they WANT PAPER FILES. And it's really hard to get them to comply with paperless techniques.

The best advice I can think to give is simply keep trying. Not everyone has a bias against age, he just has to find the right place.
There are a lot of things he could do online to make money that aren't scams. He could work for one of the online insurance companies and answer questions via email or through some type of chat for example.
Bottom line is to keep trying and not give up. Good luck!

Your husband's experience in the industry can be of benefit to a number of people who are overwhelmed with choices for insurance (life, disability, business, LTC, etc), investments, savings plans, etc. Perhaps he should consider either writing a book or holding small classes to educate people who either need to buy or sell insurance? It's important to think outside the box when it comes to marketing himself and with his own business, he'll make more money than he can working for someone else. If he charges only $10-25 per student for his hour long workshops with 10 students per class, that's at least $100 an hour ... up to $250/hour. Any business expenses he incurs for meeting room space, marketing, phone costs, etc are tax deductible. Why on earth does he want to work for someone else? He should be at the point of calling the shots and getting others to work for him!!!

Listen to this! If your husband was in the insurance business he may have heard of prepaid legal. It is "legal insurance". Anyway, we do not care about age, we just want to help people. The commission is wonderful and if he can sell, he is in for some real surprises. This might be just what he is looking for. If you email me, I will send you the link and a little information. Oh, I sure hope I can help the both of you!

My dad retired several years ago and had no idea what to do with himself. He started volunteering at the Red Cross and within 6 months he was a full time paid staff member! Maybe your husband could try the volunteer tact, as long as you don't need the cash right away.
