Everyone always thinks alcohol is an "upper" because of the way it makes you feel when you have a few. Hence the reason people who are depressed or suffering a condition such as manic or bipolar, USE alcohol to make them feel better (or to not feel at all) Unfortunately those people are even more prone to a heavier depression or down swings than those who do not have a predisposed mental condition. They are also prone to acting out rage or blacking out while drinking, due to the chemical imbalance in their brain. Add anti-depression meds into the mix and that's when all the OD's or suicides occur.

This is a deadly combination for someone who is depressed or bi-polar. It is called self-medication and it NEVER works! This person is never going to feel better by drinking and will definitely end up in trouble. It's hard to get the proper diagnosis sometimes, but if they are bi-polar, they need to get on an anti-depressant and a mood stabilizer. There is hope if the person wants help.

I think that alot of Bi Polar men before properly diagnosed drink and do drugs to cope. It can take 10 years before a proper diagnosis can be made. And yes these people could be pushed to rage even without alcohol

Alcohol affects the part of the brain that produce's the same chemicals (or lack of) that can cause depression/bi-polar.Alcohol also reduces your inhabitions which can make it easier to not try & control your rage.I'd suggest seeking treatment from g.p for medication to calm the rage & stabilize you,& if u wish to keep drinking, make sure you're Dr knows so he can give something that doesn't clah.

Of course sweetie - alcohol would affect you even if you didn't have an illness and it would definately make a bi-polar person flare out.
Have a healthy 2007!! Happy New Year!!!

ANYONE is more prone to rage when drinking, but using alcohol while depressed or mentall ill is like using fire to treat a sunburn......

Whoever it is - get them off it if you can. If not, learn to get away from them, because eventually they will really, really hurt you!

Hopefully there are no helpless children or animals around this individual. If there are, get them out too, or report him/her to the authorities.

YES! This is very dangerous to mix alcohol with depression. If you are taking medications for either of these illnesses it could be deadly. Do not drink alcohol without speaking to your doctor.

Some people love to quietly start trouble Some people love to stand up for them selves Most Affected? In a serious conflict perhaps it is the innocent bystanders Those who pay the price of the fall out and gain nothing from the conflict

Yes definitely. Plus if the person is diagnosed and is taking medication then alcohol is not good to mix together. That is bad.

alcohol is a depressant and if a depressed person drinks it he/she could become more depressed. depression is sometimes anger at oneself and that anger can be reflected on to other aspects of that persons life and that person could possibly be more prone to rage rather than wehn sober
