Depends on what bird u are after.
Small birds like finches, canarys, lifespans are approx 7 years
Budgies, peachfaces, approx 10 to 15 years if not a little more.
Cockatiels, Lorikeets etc 15 to 25 years
Larger parrots 30 years + up to 80 years for your large cockatoos.
Make sure you do your homework when it comes to buying, in other words find out what u need to give your new bird the best of care.
Birds are alot of work, handreared birds need quality time spent with them daily, can u give them that?
They need highely nutritious food, fruits, vegies, not seed only diets, imagine if u had the same food day after day for 20+ years.
THis causes health problems when birds are raised solely on seed.
Also birds need to be wormed every 3 mths, just like pups, kittens etc.
They need to be exposed to their native trees and natural perches, so having this available to them makes them very happy.
Birds also love to bathe, this is important for feather conditioning.
A large cage must be available for your birds home, length should be at least 80 cm in length, your bird will have his home to retire to in the evenings, and periods during the day.
Not to be kept in permanently.
You can make their homes something really special,
Toys to play with, comfortable surroundings natural perces, some greenary, check for what is safe trees in your country, (I live in Australia) A hammock to sleep in. (Happy Hut)
My handreared birds love their enclosures, because they are so clean, comfortable and safe, but most of all fun, fun, fun.
If you do these things and provide your bird with all that he needs they should live to their max lifespan, and provide you with a dedicated mate.

Birds ages very from breed to breed and another factor is how it is kept. A parakeet can live for 10-20 years if well taken care of.

Different species of birds can have different lifespans. For example a macaw or parrot may live to be 100 while a budgie's life span is 15 to 27 years

Birds live for varying lenghs of time. I have friends that have amazons that are over 90 yrs old african greys can also live this long macaws also depending on how well they are kept. They rarely live this long in the wild though. SO if yo are considering buying one of these please remember you will have to have someone you can leave the bird to in your will as it will probably outlive you. As for which bird lives the longest i have heard that rooks are probably the longest living bird with reports of some over 150 yrs old.

Parrots like Cockatoos, macows, and even conures can live to about 100 years if well taken care of. Those birds are smart to, they can get to know and understand what you like them to do easiely. They talk and sing to you if you teach it to. FUN birds.
Minitures (small parrots) Cockatiels, pink conures and green conures, and budgies (parrakeets). Live to about 15-25 years. Though I have had a few of those to live about 30 that were my fathers that were given to me.
Theres also birds like Love birds, Canaries, Finches, Pigeons, Doves, and sometimes you can even get Ravens as pets. :)
If you have any bird/pet questions you can e-mail me at sidesadle11@yahoo.com :) I'm always glad to answer a question for you. :)
