I was looking up spiritual retreats and I stumbled upon some 'ashrams' in different remote areas. Can someone tell me what they are and what you do there?

I met a guy who stayed in a Hindu ashram where there was a community of Hindu practitioners like himself. It seemed like a religious monastery/community. He liked it. I personally prefer Zen monasteries.

ashram is like a holy place
like the place where saints stay and all those stuff
i hav not gone to one and i dont wanna

ashram is a place in solace, mostly surrounded by green - dense forests, side of rivers, calm & quiet.and u hv preachers , yoga teachers. they r supposed to tell about indian culture, religion etc etc..but UNFORTUNATLEY they hv turned to mint money from tourists.totally COMMERCIAL.
may b 2% still genuine bt i hv doubts abt tht

In modern language it is a hostle related to religious practice.
