There are at least five;
1. Teaching the student how to do research;
2. Relatedly, doing research should expose the student to research tools (databases, reference books, etc.) in a subject area;
3. Giving the student more in depth knowledge of a given topic;
4. Teaching the student how to think about and organize an extensive amount of information;
5. Perhaps most important, teaching the student how to write, and that two of the most important parts of writing area editing and revising.

School is not just for learning fact, it is a way for you to learn how to learn. Most work that people do require thought, planning, research and writing and communication skill. Term papers help to hone that edge. Even if you are a garbage man, there is value in such learning as you research how to get a permit, or some such common activity.

Just do it and do it in an excellent fashion, it serves your purpose, not the teachers.

I'll put it another way. The guys I know that wrote the papers well are now successful and some are rich. The greasers that blew it off are tending bar and trying to get by. Your choice.

To teach you how to research (something I had to do a lot when I was working), how to compose a paper with proper paragraphing, spelling & grammar & it can teach you to be analytical (logical). Whatever your subject you will probably find many sources on the internet; just don't quote them directly. Read them & form your own opinions. And don't forget to cite your sources.

These skills are necessary in many, many jobs. Expressing yourself clearly & logically will get you a good job & promotions.
