Alcohol deprives your body of oxygen. You need this to sleep well and rest. To produce more oygen, your blood needs to circulate faster, therefore it must move around. So, you cannot sleep, you need exercise or movement to get your oxygen level corrected.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. Twice this has happened to me very recently. A clients party a couple of Wednesday's ago, I was sensible (alcohol/softie/alcohol/softie) for the first few hours and then succumbed to temptation and snuffled a load of cocktails at around 2am. Hangover (but no problem getting up) for most of the next day but then at our office party that evening I drank for England from the word go and couldn't get drunk!! Champagne, wine, vodka, sambucka (?) and baileys. Nothing. Then woke up dead early the next morning, no hangover, nothing. Just couldn't get to sleep.
This morning, tons to drink last night (smirnoff ice mostly), went back with my mate to his to give him a cuddle (aaaah), we went to bed, and zing it's 2am. I'm wide awake after 30 mins sleep. Stayed awake 'til 4am and then made my exit, clambered over him, grabbed clothes and made for the door. And now - I'm home, had breakfast, no hangover but I've been awake for around 25 hours with a 30 min break in the middle. WHY!!! I just want to sleep!!!

Alcohol disrupts your sleep. It may initially help you fall asleep but when it wears off you tend to wake up. You may want to stop drinking a couple hours before you want to go to sleep. Also alcohol tends to dehydrate you and lowers your potassium levels. So drink plenty of water and eat something like a banana or drink orange juice before you go to bed. If you've been a daily, heavy drinker for a long period of time this waking up early could be the start of withdrawal symptoms. After a few hours when blood alcohol levels have fallen symptoms like anxiety and some autonomic hyperactivity may awaken you. So my best advice is if you're only an occasional drinker is to quit drinking a couple hours before you want to go to sleep.

I have the exact same problem often. It doesn't matter what time I go to bed 3, 4 or 5 am. I will be wide awake by 7:00am. It drives me crazy that I cannot sleep. I know my body needs it, but I normally feel refreshed like I slept the whole night.

It took me years to get to that stage then it just got worse and worse. I now run an alcohol advisory service and this is one of the early warning signs that we tell our clients to watch out for! Alcohol affects many parts and functions of the body including the part that regulates our sleep patterns.Just keep an eye on your drinking habits and the effects that is has on you.If you get to the stage of the heebee geebies(as the other person stated above) it just isn't funny anymore! When you wake up are you sweating? or shaking?anyway just keep an eye on it!

Oh my goodness, this happens to me alllll the time! Thought I was the only one. Actually happened this morning (Lol)...I usually just turn on the t.v., pop a few Aleve, and lay down. Even if I can't sleep, I relax my body. I usually don't get back to sleep til late in the afternoon, then I just take a quick nap.

This used to happen to me until I started drinking at least 1 pint of water before I go to bed, strangely enough it works. I know it helps with re-hydrating yor body but that might be why your body is waking you up, maybe you need fluids? Give it a try & see what happens.

Alcohol disturbs your sleep, try not to drink for at least 2 hours before going to bed and always drink plenty of water before you go to bed.

Alcohol is both a stimulant and a sedative and it affects people differently. Happy New Year!
