You probably want something sporty looking, but please don't disregard the safety aspect of the vehicle as well. I hate to mention it, but far more accidents happen with teen drivers than any other age group. So, get something larger than a compact or mid-size car. You want something with really good passenger protection in the event of an accident. Just as an example, the below link shows you the safety rating of a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria. In an accident this car rates very highly for safety of occupants and is affordable in a used car market. It's not bad looking either. Good luck.

depends on how responsible of a driver they are. For some I wouldn't think of giving them a car but a for a nice starter car maybe mid sized 4 dr sedan or older minivan.. I know they aren't really stylish but for a 16 yr old who is still learning they could be a cheaper vehicle to tear up. Besides a 4 dr vehicle or van is cheaper on insurance than say that sporty little camaro or s10 pickup.

probably an old Volvo-safety first. teens have a bad rep for getting in accidents, and honestly most new drivers do goof up, so don't spend lots of cash on your first car. wait till you're 21 and meanwhile, sock the cash away and let it grow. use your personality to impress your friends! not your car...
best wishes,

Ford Tarus / Mercury Sable
Cheap, dependable and safe.
Also, not cool, but too bad. I got a Chevette when I was 16.
