Yes.
"Imagine there's no countries. It isn't hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for. And NO religion too."
Lyrics to "Imagine".
Most, if not, all wars and destruction have been (theistic) religion based. Without religion, we WOULD be more peaceful, absolutely.

my agnostic (doesn't know what she believes in) sister and i (a methodist christian) have often talked about this.
on the one side, yes. most of the conflicts today have to do with religion and politics. if there were no religions than all the religious battles would never have occured.
however, most charities and help sources are religion-centered. the Heifer project is funded mainly by churches giving money to them so they can buy animals to give to poor people in starving nations. AA encourages it's members to quit alcohol through following and having faith in jesus. the list goes on.
i think that the world would be a very cold place if there were no religions. Faith gives us a second family. it gives another home. it gives us a strong tree to cling to in the storm. it is an escape shelter for the hungry refugee.
it can go either way. you have to weigh both sides.

No. Religion is simply a term defining our relationship to the ultimate power/authority recognized for the definition of community and hence morality.
Humans rapidly segregate out into levels of ability/responsiblity. The upper people then set themselves apart. The view of the rest of the people toward those elite constitutes religion. cf. Pharoah and cult of Elvis.

John Lennon's famous song "Imagine" was all about this - imagine there's no Heaven - and no religion too. One of the most moving and haunting melodies with the most profound lyrics.
Then he got assasinated by a psycho fundamentalist Christian.
I dream of a more peaceful, secular world. Science and wisdom would be revered.

Oh, we'd always find things to fight about. As a Pittsburgher, born and bred, I am compelled to dislike everyone living in Cleveland, because of the antics of a bunch of very rich, very large men.

Actually yes and no. Religion plays part in many of the situations we see on television each day and maybe in real life but in all truth the thing that causes all this bother is people. Us. We. You. They. I. Them. She. He. It (varies). Don't blame the religions completely. Blame the people who are being idiots.

No, people will always find a reason to hate people who aren't like them. If it isn't religion it will be skin color, or political party, or favorite breakfast food.
Religion isn't what causes strife and conflict it's small minded, ignorant people who are afraid on the slightest difference.

No, I dont think so.
As Albert Einstein once said:
"Science without religion is lame,
religion without science is blind."
Although some dont like it, you have to admit, sometimes it does have its positive contributions to society.
