How do you supress those urges? How do you get those thoughts out of your mind? This isn't for me so spare all lectures please.

When a person normally cuts it is to be able to feel physical pain rather then emotional pain. The emotional pain that they are normally feeling is related to some event in their past.

In order to overcome the urges to cut or self harm, one must look at and deal with the event that is causing them so much emotional pain. Then if they are able to come up with different coping mechanisms.

Also to come up with different grounding techniques, to keep them in the present rather then in the past. These can include, reading a book, planting feet firmly on the ground, taking a shower, or snapping an elastic band on the place they want to cut.

If all else fails, they should develop a safety plan, so that if they have the urge to cut, they can have support. Come up with a support system, someone who would be willing to come and take all sharp objects away, and or sit with the person and help them through what they are feelinh. And if it gets too bad, that person needs to make the decision to take the person struggling in for a psychiatric evaluation.

Hope this helps

in terms of supressing urges, tell the person to avoid "triggering material" i.e. cutting websites, shows that involve razors, cutting or depressing material. Have them keep all cutting stuff locked up in a box or something, yes they will be able to get to it, however its more of a symbolic type thing. and have them seek counciling. however they arent going to stop until they are ready, so all the supressing in the world may not help.

It's a compulsion when a person gets upset, because they do not know the proper way to outlet their emotions. One way to resist is to talk about your feelings or outlet them in a healthy manner, such as exercise or crying. Also, try to wait it out. Usually, the act is done habitually and compulsively at the height of being emotional. If you can stall the person for some time, they can get over that episode. Also, I've heard that snapping a rubber band or drawing a red arm where you want to cut helps. Try these.

You really don't.....you just....do it......once you start you can't stop.....then you'll have the people who do it to be cool....or to get attention....so don't trust THOSE things....

people who do it because they can't help it....do it on their legs...or places people don't see....and DO NOT try at all to show them...so if someone you know is showing them off....it is NOT for real so tell them to cut the crap!!!....but if you stumble on it....you need to ask them WHY they do it......if it feels good if it is something else....and likely they can't make it make sence to you......so the only way to stop is to go to a syke ward.....no fun....so there is not stopping it.....

I go work out, listen to music, or write my feelings down on paper. (And of course, rip up the paper after I'm done.) Sometimes it just helps to vent to a friend.

(Been there, done that.)
