Well, at least he is still awake. I'm almost 100% sure that my dad went to bed by 9 PM.
Of course, his action can be seen as symbolic of the year to come. I prefer to think of it as an auspicious omen - after all he did get rid of the nasty stuff, and now he probably feels a whole lot better.
