Your dog may have an infection or your dog may be allergic to something. This is especially true if their is a discharge from the eye. If the redness just comes and goes without a discharge but never gets worse it may be an allergy but you should still try to determine what the cause is and then avoid exsposing your dog to it. I would take my dog to the vet anyway but definitely do if your dog acts sick or seems to be in pain. Green or yellowish discharge can indicate more that just an eye infection. It can be one of the first outward signs of respiratory disease which is often fatal if untreated especially in puppies/kittens. Eye infections should always be promptly treated because they are painful and can spread and cause a lot of damage.
Good luck!

Your dog could have a cold or could be allergic to something. If the problem persists for more than a few days or if your dog stops eating, consult a vet immediately.
I listed a website below just in case you want any more information on your dog. Good luck and I hope your dog starts feeling better.

probably infection. if its a pedigree, its advisable to bring it to a doctor real quick because their defense systems are poorer in general. even if its not, don't delay. could be contagious! and don't ever try using human eyedrops on their eyes, as animals do not require meds of that concentration. do put the animal "cone" (lol) over your doggie in case it itches so much that your dog does sthg more harmful to the eye, like accidentally scratching it, ya? :) take care!
