I was in NH last summer and we bought some fat free or very low fat (can't remember which) chips which were really really good! We don't have those in Canada. I think I heard a rumour that they cause cancer or something.

If you are speaking specifically of chips fried with Olestra, a synthetic fat substitute, the reason you don't have them in Canada is because Health Canada rejected Proctor and Gamble's application to sell Olestra products there.

Olestra is a fat that is modified so that it is not absorbed into the body, thus, no calories (but it does cook like regular oil). However, even here in the U.S., it has been associated with lots of nasty side-effects, most having to do with digestive disturbances--in other words, if Olestra doesn't get absorbed into the body, it has to exit somewhere, right? Here's a haiku I found online that explains what I mean:

She's so beautiful
But she stained my upholstery
At least she's not fat

Olestra containing chips are sold under the Lay's brand in the U.S. Until quite recently, they had to have the following warning label on them: "This Product Contains Olestra. Olestra may cause abdominal cramping and loose stools. Olestra inhibits the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients. Vitamins A, D, E, and K have been added." Food manufacturers complained and the FDA allowed the removal of this warning.

I think you're better off without them.

Probably because Canada has stricter guidelines then the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Just guessing, I would rather eat a smaller amount of something that does not have a chemical or is chemically altered then eat all this sugar-free, non-fat junk. Exception would of course be for those who are diabetic or hypo-glycemic. Just my opinion. I love the United States but sometimes don't understand this food obsessed nation, it has gotten out of control on the skinny and overweight side.

Because we love our chips, fat and all. Seriously - Canada does not make money off our people as other countries do. You would need to eat literally a couple thousand bags of chips to make a difference. Who eats that many? It is just economical numbers. For example - second-hand smoke. You have to be in a closed space about the size of a commercial plane and have someone smoke 1,760 cigarettes for you to get the equivelent of one puff of a cigarette.

Because "fat free" chips are

"...cooked in olestra..."

...and...

"OTTAWA, CANADA - Health Canada has rejected olestra, the indigestible fat substitute made by Procter and Gamble, for use as a food additive in Canada. According to a letter sent June 8 by Marc Le Maguer, the Director General of the Food Directorate, "Health Canada has completed its review of Olestra and has decided not to recommend that Olestra be permitted for use as a food additive in Canada."

The Olestra, a fake fat, caused anal leakage in some people. Canada is probably more cautious. Try baked chips; they taste better than the fat free.

The Canadian Health department has been corrupt by morbidly obese people since the early 1950's. They think if they make peole fatter, thty will eat more, making more money for the goverment. Then they told people that fat free items were illiegal and they caused cancer. They said, "leave it to the Americans and their 'fat-free' items. They're dead anyways" That is why Canadians are so fat.

Yeah the fat free potato chips are not made with potatoes. They are manufactured in some factory with imitation potatoes and are loaded with other man made chemicals as well. If you eat too much of this imitation, genetically engineered crap, you could get cancer as well as other diseases. I would stay away from them if i were you. Stick with NATURAL products.

Baked potato chips are pretty good and they're fat-free. they do have calories, but not nearly as many as those fried in oil. there are also "Terra" chips, which are made from various root vegetables, such as turnips, beets, sweet potaoes, taro root, and others. You can find them in the 'organic' section of most grocers.
