Herbs (ones that you will use) are great on a window sill in the kitchen. Useful and attractive, too.

If you have a sunny window (east to south facing) you might try herb pots on the windowsill. They might be hard to find in the winter unless you live in a frost-free area. Chives and cilantro are more tolerant of cool weather than, let's say, basil and oregano which are heat lovers. If you do not have a lot of direct sun but have a bright place you might look for a plant called cyclmen which starts showing up in "home" stores. It has a very beautiful blossom and prefers cooler weather. Most plants come with instructions on their care. Many times plants are "loved to death" by overwatering so it is important to be mindful of your plant's water needs. Whatever you select be sure it looks healthy with no sign of bugs, soggy yellow or black splotches, or wilting. Very shady places such as a north facing window are best for house plants marked as tolerant of low light conditions. Ivy, ferns, and Peace Lily all will accept low light. You will want to be aware of the eventual size your plant will grow up to be. Most of all, have fun experimenting with different plants!

basil. It is easy to grow, good to eat, lasts a long time. Maybe aloe vera is the best answer though. Want some of mine? It won't quit growing. i've had the same aloe plant since 1995 and I've moved like 10 times since then.

Sweet potato ... no joke..Take and cut a sweet potato in half and place in some dirt with the eyelets coming out of the dirt...cut side face down in the dirt.Keep the soil real moist until the eyelets sprout vines....warning this is a trailing plant so you will have to route the vines inside the pot or trail them around the window. The leaves are so beautiful and it grows really fast.make sure you have it in a sunny window.half shade half sunlight.
Enjoy.
