Congratulations! I love Maltese pups; I've had 3 over the past 26 years. All-around wonderful dogs except for...
Grooming. With regard to the stains and "gunk" emanating from the inside corners of his eyes,it's just something you're going to have to live with. My 1st Maltese came from a long, long-time breeder. He recommended wiping daily with a damp wash cloth and periodically applying a paste of baking soda with water to the stain, letting it dry and gently brushing it off. [I might have tried this once or twice way back when.]
There are dozens of commercial products available for this but NONE OF THEM WORK so do not waste your money.
Best advice is the wet cloth; you'll always have stains, but you'll avoid the "gunk" building up and matting the eye shut and resulting in an eye infection.
Unsolicited helpful hint: if your pup is smelling a little less than fresh and or not too clean: sprinkle cornstarch baby powder on his coat. Rub in a little bit, then lightly brush. Looks and smells fresh as a daisy!

Tear stains are quite a problem with the Maltese and other dogs. It can be eliminated by simple surgery by a vet. I never had it done on my Bichons but know that the stains are detracting. Keep the area as clean as possible or the moisture of the stain can produce a dermititis and infection.
I had found a tear stain remover and a powder in Dr Foster's catalog. Check them out.

The shampoos you buy at Petsmart or Petco are not that good! A vet once told me this. Keep the hair around eyes trimmed & clean. Use a little bit of hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball for the staining...use gently & don't deliberately get into eyes. It really can't hurt them & does wonders for the staining.
PS: I have white dogs too...bichon frises!

You cannot stop the weeping but stores like PetCo and PetSmart carry special shampoos to get rid of the stains.

They make special treatments to remove tear stains on dogs at your local pet store. There is no way to control it or for the matter to stop it. All you can do is use the special treatments daily to help prevent staining to bad. Goodluck!

who ever is grooming your dog is not doing a very good job, no offence to ya groomer. you also might want to have your vet check out your dogs eyes to make sure its not an infection that is causing the weeping of his eyes.
to get rid of the tear stain you can uses proxide, get a rag DO NOT USE COTTON BALLS!! and wipe the area, it will take several applacations of what ever you use to totally get rid of the stain

Is there any ear infection (shaking head, trying to dig the ear with paws)? Ear infection will lead to tearing
This is a trick that I learn from other groomers. Wipe the eyes stain areas with cooled chamomile tea daily.

The eyes of cocker spaniels also weep. You can buy products at any pet store to remove it.
