my girlfriend had a cat that lived to be 20 yrs old- my mother in law had a cat that lived to be 17 yrs old. I guess it just depends on genetics and on the care you give them.

Some cats can live short lives well others can live long and fullfilling lives. It all depends on how you care for your cat and make sure it is not put in any danger. I know somebody that has a cat that is still living and is like 17 or 18 years old. Then there are unfortunate situation were people run over cats. My cat got ran over about a month ago and he was only 1 1/2 yrs old. Like I said all depends.

this is a bit like "how long is a piece of string" as there are many variables.

A 'stray' or 'alley' cat will generally only survive an average of about 7 years. A cat that has a house with a human that cares for it, but spends a lot of time outside will live (on average) for about 12-15 years.

A cat that spends most of it's life indoors and doesn't get involved in fighting with other animals can live 20+ years, although any cat over 20 (human) years is doing pretty well.

A bit like humans, the better they are cared for and the less fighting they are involved in, generally the longer the cat will live.

According to a quick internet search the average lifespan of a domestic cat is 13-16 years.

Your moggy's mileage may vary. :)

It differs for indoor and outdoor or both. I have a indoor cat that is 14 years old and still full of life. Indoor cats an live anywhere from 11-18+ years! Outdoor cats normally live 4-7 years. Indoor/outdoor cats 8-11+ It also depends on the diet and general health.

It depends on the cat, its health at birth, type of breed, etc. Some cats only live a few years, some live 20 or more years. I would say you should expect abour 5-10 years for a cat.

They live as long as they are supposed to live, barring accidents or disease. what do you mean by they don't live long enough?

In captivity, indoor cats typically live 14 to 20 years, though the oldest-known cat lived to age 36 (lived from 1903 to 1939, he was a tabby cat called, "Puss").

Domestic cats tend to live longer if they are not permitted to go outdoors (reducing the risk of injury from fights or accidents and exposure to diseases) and if they are spayed or neutered. Some such benefits are: neutered male cats cannot develop testicular cancer, spayed female cats cannot develop ovarian cancer, and both have a reduced risk of mammary cancer.
