As others have mentioned, the relationship between humans, dogs (and indeed, cats) is an ancient one. I doubt the semi tame wolves that first interacted with humans were kept as 'pets' though, rather humans and dogs would end up working together to catch game, keep warm and later for security, company and affection.
That said i am sure our ancestors found the antics of their working dog's puppies as funny and cute as we do and probably enjoyed having them around just for the fun of it.
Dogs, cats and humans have a symbiotic relationship which bring benefits and strengths to all parties in the group. Dogs are especially useful if you have to hunt your prey and defend your family group from danger. Cats keep rats, mice and other vermin out of your food supply, and are expert hunters of small game.
Don't forget that wild dogs (esp wolves) are formidable enemies. Much better to have them on your side by keeping them friendly with food scraps and shelter.

I watched a special on PBS just recently. The wolves that stayed around and rummaged their food from the humans garbage pile, became tame and used to humans. Eventually the humans took the pups as pets.

Millions of years ago when primitive men were still living in caves, they started to domesticate the wolf and so the first pets were born.

It couldn't have been millions of years ago, because man wasn't around then. The oldest skeleton has been dated at what?, some 25,000 years old..?
