I've read that learning a new language or a musical instrument is a good weapon against getting Alzheimer's because it keeps the mind working, so they must also be good to keep your mind sharp.

The old saying "if you don't use it, you lose it" is very true whether it refers to the body or the brain. It's normal as a person ages to become forgetful and not quite as "sharp". There are many things that keep your mind active and working well. Talking with friends, reading, watching educational programs on TV, learning a new skill (hobby) such as crocheting, painting, playing a musical instrument. There are many games on the internet that test your memory.

Gee .. it is hard to think !! Jokes aside .. supplements of Vitamin B and Omega 3 (fish oil) capsules, a balanced diet, physical exercise, limiting stress, keeping interested in life (i.e. keep learning). Also research has shown that if those in later years keep their mind busy with crosswords and other puzzles they are less likely to suffer from dementia type illnesses.

As I prepared to answer your question, I read your other answers, and found that my answer is very similar to many of the others. I was going to recommend crossword puzzles which have been proven to forestall the onset of Alzheimer's disease if your family heritage reveals Alzheimer's, but the more comprehensive answer of "puzzles" is better, as well as reading books or anything as opposed to watching tv or going to the movies or spending hours listening to "music". Eating right, and exercising also are excellent ways to help keep your mind sharp. One thing no one has said, and yet I must say, is to develop one's faith in Jesus our Christ as our ONLY Lord and Saviour. The reasoning behind this is, besides to pay tribute and honor to our Creator, to exercise an aspect of our mental capacity which so many people fail to use, and therefore allow to dwindle away or atrophy simply because we are afraid to believe, just like as children are afraid of things they can't see and yet are aware actually exist. Being a mental health practitioner of 20+ years experience and having administered untold numbers of tests measuring intellectual functioning to a wide array of individuals, left me astonished at the absence of our mental capacity to believe in someone or something so obvious as Jesus our Christ, so, please allow me to add that recommendation to my answer, for purely cognitive as well as purely spiritual and life-oriented things to do to keep our mind sharp. Believing in Jesus as our Christ is unpassable in keeping our mind sharp, if for no other reason being the ability to read and interpret and really understand the Bible beyond what you hear on Sunday from the pulpit or Sunday school. Assuming a greater responsibility in believing in Jesus through His Bible is an awesome way to keep our mind sharp, and save our being. God Bless you.

I like card games such as Solitaire to keep my mind active without drawing upon existing memory (much) or adding anything to be remembered...thus, the mind is active without being exhausted with complicated problem solving.

plenty of protein and read a lot of book, add some knowledgeable material. then check out yourself with those free test on line.

some herbal like ginkgo bilkoba were recommended but im not sure if its advisable or applicable and who knows if its proven already. i told my friend that and she was mad at me cause she flunk the test taking it. i think she rely on it too much, she didn't study, i know some herbal is proven to some degree but it still need your input. if that herb is so magical, everyone who take it should get a higher mark in a flash without studying. but i highly doubt it, that is my opinion.

All you can do is use it as much as possible. You can never gaurantee that it will stay sharp at any point in time. All you can do is work on it and hope for clarity and awareness.
