Here's the 2006 list from the Whole Dog Journal. These are highest quality foods. Most of these are not carried at large chain stores but you can usually find them at small pet stores, feed and grain stores, etc.

Yes I feed my dog overpriced high quality foods. I try my hardest to eat healthy, I'm only fifteen but I have a history of heart disease in my family, don't get my wrong I still eat crappy foods lol. But my dogs are my biggest motivators. We go for 2 walks a day lasting 30 mins and a stop at the old baseball field during our walks to play a 20 minute game of off leash fetch. Well that's about over 3 hours of exercise for me lol. If I didn't have my three dogs I would probably eat like a pig. lol

Innova is a brand that came highly recommended by our vet and is what we feed our dogs. I researched other brands, but none seemed to come close for me. It's not a brand available at the "Petsmart" type of supply store, tho and it does come with a higher price tag. Look at the ingredients when researching the various brands you are considering. Things like corn meal are used as fillers in the "cheaper" brands and not so very good for the dogs. If corn meal or other filler type ingredient is listed in the first 3-5 ingredients, then I wouldn't use it.

Apparently you haven't been a breeder for very long or you wouldn't be asking this question. I think it's very weird that you are breeding dogs but don't know how to feed them. Grocery market brands of dog food is basically like feeding your dogs McDonald's every day.

Natural Balance, Merrick, and Innova are quite possibly the best a dog could have. I have two dogs, and I go through a 35lb bag of Natural Balance every month. I pay $40 for it. It's worth it in the long run because of NB I have healthy dogs.

When you go out to purchase dog food you want to look at the ingredients label on the side of the bag. You want to buy a food with the first ingredient being a meat product such as lamb, chicken, beef, etc....Any dog food that starts with the ingredient ground yellow corn is not something you want to feed your dogs. I would say one of the best foods would be either Iams or Eukanuba. If price is a issue then go for a food with the first ingredient being a meat product. I have had experience with Iams and it seemed to be the best. It fills your dogs tummy up and provides the right about of nutrition. Good luck!

Anything by Purina is pretty low on the high quality foods list. In fact most of your better known brands are, this include Eukanuba, Iams, Science Diet, etc.

Vets are great sources of medical information but they very POOR sources of nutritional information. Vets are required to take very little in the way of animal nutrition courses, in fact these are usually just an elective. The few classes they are offered are either taught by or sponsored by major dog food companies. No bias in that teaching huh? Vets also of course make money on the foods they sell, as well as recieve 'perks' from dog food companies for promoting a certain food.

So when looking for a high quality food, I'd stay away from your better known, highly advertised brands, and look for the following:

Here is some information on finding a high quality food for your dog.

Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, and Cannidae.

There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:

A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.

A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.

A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.

A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.

There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

Read labels and decide for yourself what the best food is. As a breeder, you have a responsibility to your dogs' health, and to your potential future customers to provide them with the proper knowledge about their new pets' nutrition.

Avoid foods that have the following ingredients (regardless of whether they're in the first 3, 5 or 10---placement doesn't matter as dog food manufacturers are NOT required to list ingredients in order of weight content, as human manufacturers are):

corn (filler---useless for your pet)
by-products (beaks, feat, organs---nutritionally inferior to meat---essentially by-products are the parts left over after they make hot dogs for us)
soy (allergen--and hard to digest)
wheat (see above)
brewers' rice (rice fragments left over from the alcohol industry---nutritionally inferior to whole brown rice)

Foods that contain the above? Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Ol Roy, Kibbles and Bits, Maxximum, Pro Plan, Nature's Recipe, Science Diet, Nutro Max, and more.

Look for a food that has an identified meat source as the first and preferably 2nd ingredient (though, as I mentioned, it's no guarantee the dog foods' weigh is comprised mostly of that meat). Look for whole grains such as oatmeal, barley, whole ground brown rice, ect. Look for the right vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, carrots, zucchini, ect.

Some GOOD foods? Blue Buffalo Blue for Dogs, Innova, Wellness, Chicken Soup, Timberwolf Organics, and Nutro ULTRA.

Good luck!

Many foods contain wheat, soy, and corn and which can cause allergies in dogs. They also contain artificial preservatives, which just as they aren't healthy for us, they aren't for dogs either.Mnay natural foods are worht the extra $. Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken is a great puppy food, which is great for pups and their mother while she is still nursing. Also adding an organic plain yogurt is good for the mom.

Yeah ,Purina anything is junk food. I have seen natures recipe but i dont remember if it its good or not. Most any dog food in the grocery store is poor quality. You can go to www.whole-dog-journal.com and ask for their WJD's 2006 Top approved Dog foods list. Or you can call them at 800-829-9165.
I have found good dog food for as low as $0.75 per pound, and excellent dog food for just over a $1.00. You can spend more.

Purina is crap. As a breeder, you ought to know this already.

Nature's Recipe is made by Dole products, and is better than Purina by a long shot. But it is not the best.
Try Natural Balance, Merrick, AvoDerm, Innova Eva, California Naturals, Eagle Pack, or Castor and Pollux.
