You do not need to claim the childs income on your taxes. You can claim the child as a dependent until age 24 as long as the child is a full time student even if they are living away from home, dorm, etc.
The child can file their own tax return but not claim themselves on the return to get back their withholding.

The Form 8814 to elect to report a dependent child's income on your return is only applicable for children 14 year olds and under. For children over the age of 14, the dependent child will need to file a return.

The reason the cut-off is 14 years old is because under the age of 14, a child's income is always taxed at the parent's tax rate. Over the age of 14, the child's income is always taxed at the tax rate based on their own income. This is to prevent a parent from sheltering money from tax by having the income under the child's name and being taxed at a lower tax rate.

You can include the child's interest, dividends, and capital gain distributions on your return by including Form 8814.

If the child files his own return, the first $850 of investment income is tax-free. The second $850 is taxed at the child's rate. Amounts in excess are taxed at the parents highest tax rate (the kiddie tax).

The kiddie tax now applies to all children under 18.
