First let me tell you that I own a pest control company and what I will recommend is the complete treatment that should help you completely get rid of the fleas.

First, treat the pet with Capstar. This is a pill that you get from the vet that will kill all of the fleas that get on the animal for the first 24 hours. Second, use either Frontline or Advantage, these can also be purchased from the vet. Frontline can be used on pets 12 weeks old or older. Advantage can be used on animals as young as 6 weeks. If the pet is old enough for either product, switch back and forth between the two. One month use one, the next use the other. The reason I recommend this is that there are two main types of fleas that infest pets. One product works better on the first type and the other product works better on the second type. By using both, you make sure you have covered all your bases.

Once the pet has been treated, you must treat your home and yard. The best products to do this would include not only a killing agent, but also a sterilization agent. Inside, I would use Ultracide, if you can get it. (Many on line sites sell it.) Follow the instructions on the label! Wash all animal’s bedding and vacuum frequently. Throw out the vacuum bag or dump the catch container after every vacuuming. You can never vacuum too much! DO NOT STEAM CLEAN YOUR RUGS! This can hatch flea eggs and make your problem worse.

Outside I would use Demon WP mixed with Gentrol or Nylar, carefully following label instructions. Treat the entire yard, paying special attention to under bushes and low hanging branches. Most of these products can be bought at any Do-It-Yourself Pest Control company either on line or in a store.

Treating your house and yard is just as important as treating the pet!

It is also very important to stay away from the grocery store or box store products like Zodiac or Hartz. Many of these products can cause severe allergic reactions in animals.

Cheapest and easiest way, and very effective:

Locate some electric sockets in different rooms of your home that would be good to put a night-light in which could be seen in the largest part of the room. Get a night light for each room and plug them in those sockets. At night shut off all lights except the night lights and put a small bowl of water directly under the lights. Put a couple of drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid soap in the water in each bowl. The soap breaks the surface tension of the water and allows the fleas to sink - fleas can 'stand' on top of plain water, and even jump off it! The fleas will be attracted to the lights and jump at them and land in the water and drown. Your pets may drink a little of the water and it could give them a little diarreah, but not much, not enough to cause a problem. Just keep doing it until you stop catching fleas, and then keep on a few more nights to catch the next brood. If you've got a table with a tablecloth or couch near the wall where there's a socket you can put a trap there too. It beats the heck out of poisons and endless vacuuming, and is not really that much effort.

Inside or outside???
If inside vacuum daily until they are gone. Get an 'aerosol' flea insecticide and spray the floors and couch and everywhere the pets lay. Do this at least every 2 weeks until the fleas are gone. If you have dogs-bathe them with shampoo no less that once a week. If cats?????? I don't know?? Don't buy expensive flea shampoos-"head and shoulders" or 'suave" (any shampoo) works just as good-soap suds kill the fleas.
If outside go to local home supply and get a garden hose sprayer and some liquid insecticide and spray your yard where the animals stay. stay after it-once per week.

Here is the problem!!!! Fleas lay eggs, and the eggs hatch into a worm and the worm spins a cocoon-you can not see them. Treatment only kills live fleas-not eggs or cocoons. In warm weather-you should be through with them in about 6 weeks.
If you just have a few and there are not many eggs-you may get lucky and wipe them out in one move. if they are real bad-a month or two.
good luck.

BTW-what ever you spray your house and yard with-be sure you buy it from a store-it will be safe as long as you follow the label directions-DO NOT get something from your neighbor or old uncle Ed that has been in their barn for 20 years. There is some old stuff that will hurt people and pets.

If you have them in your house, either call an exterminator OR get rid of them yourself by buying Raid bombs. Many include fleas as one of the pests they kill. Take your pet(s) and any other living organism (plants, family) out of the house for a few hours while the bombs go off in your house and settle down. You may have to repeat this two or three times within a few weeks to completely eradicate the fleas and other pests. The Raid bombs are sold at Wal-Mart and Target. They emit a gas into the atmosphere that kills roaches, fleas, etc. After a few hours, it is perfectly safe for people and animals to come back into the house. Now, if the fleas are on your dog or cat, dip the animal in flea shampoo AND get a few doses of those flea and tick drops that you apply directly to the skin between the shoulder blades. This medicine soaks in and works EXTREMELY well for weeks at a time. Just be sure to ask your vet for the correct dosage for your animal's weight. If YOU have fleas, bathe regularly, shave any hair that you can stand to get rid of (that means ALL OVER your body, including chest hair, underarm hair, back hair, etc.), and use a lice shampoo on the hair you keep. It may not knock them all out, but if it doesn't, you really need to just CALL a doctor and ask how they would recommend getting rid of the pesky little devils. I doubt they'll even need to have you come in for an appointment. They'll probably just give you another few ideas of washes you could use that would help get rid of them. Good luck!!!

Umm, on you or the dog (jk)? Best thing is one of those products that breaks the life cycle eg Frontline plus. Kills the fleas and the eggs wont form properly so the next generation will be wiped out. Apply once a month during flea season( i do it for 2 months then see if they come back. so far it's been enough). If the fleas are inside your house, flea bombs work if you use enough of them, but still flea proof your dog or you will get re-infested.

I'm sorry but you don't need all these dodgy solutions.

Get rid of fleas - Over here in the UK you can get a product called Frontline. It's awesome, works on pretty much any animal - fleas and tics. If not go to your vet and get a good flea spray. Flea collars aren't as good.

Now, as for the crappy carpet things - You REALLY don't need them. Cheap easy and effective - table salt. Sprinkle it on your carpets and leave for 5 minutes or so. Then hoover it up.

As for yourself, take a hot bath. You can pull of any fleas you have on your body. If you have ticks - remember to twist as you pull them out, otherwise you leave in the head.
Don't worry too much about yourself, whatever wuss said that flea bites hurt was exaggerating. I'm only 14 for gods sake and they didn't hurt me when I got them from a mates cat.

You can bathe your dog with a flea shampoo, but remember that fleas jump. Don't spray water onto the dog first or they will jump! Predilute your shampoo and apply it liberally to the dog. Let it soak for about 15 minutes to make sure the fleas die. Then rinse and spray a Flea/Tick control on your dog. Also spray your yard and vacuum or steam clean all carpet.

If you go to the local vet, they may give you some suggestions. Try a flea color, or flea bath. There is also a type of stuff that you can get only from some vets though. I don't remember what it is called.
