Look on the left side of the barrel just below the rear sites. My 1100 has the shell size stamped in the barrel.

The magnum was designed to shoot 3 inch shells, however, beware!!.
The barrels can be changed so you need to check on the barrel to see if it is chambered for 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells. You can shoot either in a 3 inch, but, only 2 3/4 in the 2 3/4 inch chambered barrel. The 1100 is a great shotgun-enjoy!

The Rem 1100 comes in several guages,i.e. .410, 32 ga, 28 ga, 20 ga, 16 ga & 12 ga. This info will be on the bbl. Since it has the designation "Magnum" it will be capable of cycling either the 2 3/4" or 3" magnum. I don't believe the Rem 1100 of 1986 was available in 3 1/2 Mag. I own a Rem 1187 at the present.

Read the side of the barrel. If it says 12 gauge - 2 and 3/4 inch then buy 12 gauge 2 and 3/4 inch shells. If it says 12 gauge - 3 inch shells then you can buy either.

I would check and see if the gun has a choke installed as well. If it does, you might possibly have trouble shooting slugs out of it.

It will be fine. The magnum will handle 3.5" shells, but will eject standard trap rounds that are 2-34" just fine. You're correct you could do all of this manually if needed. We always shot 870 pumps on trap, and were only allowed to load one shell at a time (4-H Rules back then).

Read on the side of the barrel. It will tell you what it is chambered for.

That's why you ask the guy in the gun dept. "what size shell does this shotgun take?" before you purchase the weapon.
HS, I hope you don't live/hunt near me.
