I thought they were mice, but I saw one and it was like the size of a cat. How can I be sure?

Rats can be the size of a small kitten and in some cases a cat depending on where you live. Mice are small, usually no larger than your hand in body length. The only way you can be sure is to monitor for droppings and set a trap.

Well, rats are generally bigger than mice. Rats also have bigger turds. To be honest, if you saw something that big around, I suggest you should get a few cats and turn 'em loose, then you wouldn't have to waste points on a question like this.

Sounds like you have rats. Get a cat or some rat poison (to put under the house). Anyway you need to get rid of them. Rats carry all kind of diseases.

If its that big...I can say with confidence it is a rat. Either that or you have deformed cats in you're neighborhood.
But if you reallly want to make sure...
A rat is an excellent climber where as a mouse is so so. And they won't scurry away in a panic like a mouse would...they are very bratty things.

Rats have pointer noses and longer tails.The can be the size of a cat.

it most likely is rats. put out some rat dope like decon or set a few rat traps. should solve the problem

look at the size of the poop.mice are little and rats look like big black pieces of large size rice....
